At least he tried and now it is a matter of public record.
Geez he really needs to get some public speaking coaching though. Or at least practice his oratory before going into the house. This is the second time I've heard him speak in the house and both times were shaky at best.
You will need a pod cast program to download and listen to this. CPAC has links to these programs free.

Best Email of the year
I received this the other day and thought it worthy of a blog.
Best Email of The Year
I sat in my seat of the Boeing 767 waiting foreveryone to hurry and stow their carry-ons and grab
a seat so we could start what I was sure to be a long, uneventful flight home. With the huge
capacity and slow moving people taking their time to stuff luggage far too big forthe overhead and
never paying much attention to holding up the growing line behind them, I simply shook my head
knowing that this flight was not starting out very well. I was anxious to get home to see my loved
ones so I was focused on my issues and just felt like standing up and yelling for some of these
clowns to get their act together. I knew I couldn't say a word so I just thumbed thru the "Sky Mall"
magazine from the seat pocket in front of me. You know it's really getting rough when ! you
resort to the over priced, useless sky mall crap to break the monotony. With everyone finally
seated, we just sat there with the cabin door open and no one in any hurry to get us going
although we were well past the scheduled take off time. No wonder the airline industry is in trouble
I told myself. Just then, the attendant came on the intercom to inform us all that we were being
delayed. The entire plane let out a collective groan.she resumed speaking to say "We are holding
the aircraft for some very special people who are on their way to the plane and the delay shouldn't
be more than 5 minutes. The! word came after waiting six times as long as we were promised that
I was finally going to be on my way home. Why the hoopla over "these" folks? I was expecting
some celebrity or sport figure to be the reason for the hold up .. Just get their butts in a seat and
let's hit the gas I thought. The attendant came back on the speaker to announce in a loud and
excited voice that we were being joined by several Canadian Soldiers returning home from
Afghanistan !!! Just as they walked on board, the entire plane erupted into applause. The men
were a bit taken by surprise by the 340 people cheering for them as they searched for their seats.
They were having their hands shook and touched by almost everyone who was within an arm's
distance of them as they passed down the aisle. One elderly woman kissed the hand of one of the
Soldiers as he passed by her. The applause, whistles and cheering didn't stop for a long time. When
we were finally airborne, I was not the only civilian checking his conscience as to the delays in "me"
getting home, finding my easy chair, a cold beverage and the remote in my hand. These men had
done for all of us and I had been complaining silentlyabout "me" and "my" issues I took for granted
the everyday freedoms I enjoy and the conveniences of the Canadian way of life. I took for
granted that others had paid the price for my ability to moan and complain about a few minutes
delay to "me" while those Heroes were going home to their loved ones. I attempted to get my
selfish outlook back in order and minutes before we landed, I suggested to the attendant that she
announce over the speaker a request for everyone to remain in their seats until our heroes were
allowed to gather their things and be first off the plane. The cheers and applause continued until
the last soldier stepped off and we a ll rose to go about our too often taken for granted everyday
freedoms. I felt proud of them. I felt it an honour and a privilege to be among the first to welcome
them home and say "Thank You for a job well done."
I vowed that I will never forget that flight nor the lesson learned. I can't say it enough, THANK
YOU to those Veterans and active servicemen and women who may read this and a prayer for those who cannot because they are no longer with us. GOD BLESS CANADA! WELCOME HOME! AND THANKS FOR A JOB WELL DONE!!!!!

Afghan President Karzai says Afghan deaths 'not acceptable'
KABUL (AP) — Afghan President Hamid Karzai urged the international community to reassess its approach to the war on terror, saying Thursday the deaths of hundreds of Afghans, including Taliban militants, was “not acceptable.”
A clearly frustrated Karzai said the approach being taken to hunt down militants does not focus on the roots of terrorism itself.
“I strongly believe ._._. that we must engage strategically in disarming terrorism by stopping their sources of supply of money, training, equipment and motivation,” Karzai said during a press conference.
In recent weeks, Afghan and coalition forces have launched a massive anti-Taliban operation across four southern provinces, aimed at killing or capturing fighters blamed for an upsurge in violence.
More than 600 people, mostly militants, have been killed since May as insurgents have launched their deadliest campaign of violence in years. At least 14 coalition soldiers have been killed in combat since mid-May.
“It is not acceptable for us that in all this fighting, Afghans are dying. In the last three to four weeks, 500 to 600 Afghans were killed. (Even) if they are Taliban, they are sons of this land,” he said.

Local company to Revolutionize Natural Gas transport
Local company with revolutionary
method for transporting gas files patent
The St. John’s company, Trans Ocean Gas,
filed patent applications this week for a new
method to transport natural gas in large,
fibre-reinforced pressurized plastic cylinders.
The new containers are lighter and more durable
than the usual steel containers.
Currently, the only way to transport natural gas
is by pipeline or by liquefied natural gas tanker.
Both methods are massively expensive, especially
for smaller, isolated natural gas fields such as those
around the coasts of Newfoundland and Labrador.
Steve Campbell, president of Trans Ocean Gas,
has said the new technology, which combines
freezing and compression, would cut costs by as
much as two thirds.
Campbell came up with the idea in the early
1990s while working as a supervisor during the
construction of Hibernia’s concrete gravity-based
structure and trying to figure out a way to transport
the reservoir’s gas.
Expensive pipelines and transporting liquefied
natural gas in steel structures, which have corrosion
and rupture characteristics, weren’t good
enough options.
After spending time as a pipeline and facilities
engineer in Alberta, which included some work
with plastics, Campbell found a simpler solution.
“I saw a bus going by that was fuelled by natural
gas and I said, ‘Well what kind of container’s
on that?’” he told The Independent in an interview
last year. “I found that it had a composite (reinforced
plastic) pressure vessel but it had an aluminum
liner, still the same thing with the corrosion
potential, but it was composite wrapped … I realized
that an all composite pressure vessel would be
the trick. Lightweight and frozen resistant.”
The Independant— Ryan Cleary
Wish I had some money I think I would invest in this company. I've seen and utilized similar vessels with compressed air and I can concurr to the light weight and durability of this type of vessel.

Federal Job Vacuum in Newfoundland/Labrador
Federal job vacuum
By ROB ANTLE, The Telegram
Ottawa is benefiting most from the recent growth in federal jobs, with the Atlantic region faring worst among all provinces.
That’s according to briefing papers prepared for federal Treasury Board president John Baird earlier this year.
“Federal government employment growth has been more pronounced in the National Capital Region than elsewhere in the provinces and territories due to greater emphasis on policy, centralized service delivery, and devolution/outsourcing,” note the documents, dated Feb. 24.
The Telegram obtained the papers under federal access-to- information laws.
While the documents may not exactly contain stop-the-press surprises, they bolster the view among many that this region is faring the worst on the federal jobs front.
Ottawa-area jobs grew 21 per cent between 1999 and 2005, compared to nine per cent elsewhere, the papers state.
As a result, 31 per cent of all federal employees worked in the nation’s capital in 2005, up from 29 per cent in 1999.
The number of workers had plunged in almost all regions between 1991 and 1999, as a result of a program review that resulted in job cuts.
According to a chart provided with the briefing papers, the Atlantic provinces lost more than 20 per cent of their federal jobs during program review in the 1990s.

Harper Govt in Conflict of interest on Hebron Ben-Nevis Fallow Field legislation
Because Harpers govt is primarily made up of Alberta MP's. It is understandible that his govt would have the intersts of the Oil Sands as their main focus of interest. So any other interests that would hinder or in any way shape or form harm the development of the labour, infrastrucure intensive process of extracting the oil from the sand would be in contravention of his parties priorities.
So it's no wonder Harper who is now in charge of the Governments 10 % controlling interest in the Hebron Ben-Nevis project would not want to see that project move forward anytime soon because it would be in direct competition with the Alberta Tar sands project in his home province which makes up a large part of his caucas.
So I really wasn't surpried when Harper being a part owner of the Hebron Ben-Nevis oil field rejected the Fallow Field legislation that Premier Danny Williams proposed due to the exorbidant demands being Made by E$$on/Mobile and the consortium.
It really is funny when you consider that Aalberta implemented Fallow Field legislation for their tar sands back in the 70's. Alberta's mineral rights are soley owned by the province unlike NL which has to deal with the outside controlling interest of Ottawa which at this time is in a conflict of interest IMHO.
The same analogy could be arrived at for Kyoto.
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/05/30/AR2006053001429.html
Harper never did open the books as to who funded his campaign? I wonder why?
Once again Newfoundland/Labrador is being hung out to dry because of a conflict of interest by it's partner. The same as happened with the Upper Churchill negotiations. Read for yourself "Origins of an impending crisis" which documents the negotiations leading up to the Upper Churchill Shaft.

Mineral Occurances map of Newfoundland/Labrador
Tried to get a map of this onto here but I guess I need a screen capture tool for that so you'll have to play around yourself if your interested.
The Mineral occurances map is quite interesting. Were swimming in minerals in this province according to this map.

Grandfather and Confederation. Lest we forget.
I took the liberty of reposting this comment from http://freenewfoundlandlabrador.blogspot.com/2006/06/newfoundland-and-labradors-hugo-chavez.html
I felt it deserved a post of it's own.
no longer proud said...
Thanks, anon.... I assumed I would get blasted for being a 'crackpot conspiracy theorist' (then again, this thread is still young, haha...). The following is a poem I thought I'd share, written by a man named John Davidge (originally from Bay Du Nord, Fortune Bay, a community no longer in existence due to resettlement) about his grandfather's reaction to the news of NL's joining with Canada. Mr. Davidge's grandfather was obviously no fool...
Grandfather and Confederation
(John B. Davidge)
I was almost three months shy of my fifteenth birthday when Newfoundland and Labrador became the tenth province of Canada and I remember that day and the days leading up to it as if it were only yesterday.
To say that my parents and grandparents were anti-confederates would be very much of an understatement, but it was my grandfather’s strong opposition to it that I remember most. His words and actions are recorded here as I’m sure he would want them to be.
Lest we forget.
April the first, nineteen forty-nine
Was a day that I’ll soon not forget.
The radio blared that the “terms” had been signed,
Filling Grandfather’s heart with regret.
I can still see his eyes filled with anger and hate
At this terrible thing they had done.
A true Newfoundlander he felt t’was too late,
And he mourned as if losing a son.
He first lit a candle then he pulled down the blinds,
And he placed some black crepe on the door.
He looked somber and sad in his black suit and hat,
And the black satin armbands he wore.
He was eighty years old but he climbed up the hill
To the church with it’s steeple and bell.
His eyes filled with tears as his hands gripped the rope,
And he softly tolled the death knell.
There wasn’t a coffin, a body or grave,
The dying was all in his mind.
This joining with Canada wasn’t for him,
A patriot true to his kind.
I was only a “gaffer” but I still recall
How his voice rang with passion and pride.
“You have sold out your birthright,
you’ve let down the flag
That your forefathers fought for and died.
That up-along bunch will be down here in droves,
They’ll force you to flee from your home,
There’ll be taxes on this, there’ll be taxes on that,
And you won’t have a thing of your own.
They’ll tear up the countryside, take all the land,
They’ll catch all the fish in the bay.
You won’t be allowed to have horses and cows
Unless you are willing to pay.
They have filled you with promises, all of them lies,
They say there is nothing you’ll lack,
They’ll give you the Bonus, the Pension and such,
And with taxes they’ll take it all back.
They got you to thinking the skies will be blue,
And the sun won’t again fail to shine,
But you’ll have second thoughts
when this land of your birth
Is alive with corruption and crime.
You’ll have a new anthem, you’ll have a new flag,
They’ll watch what you write, say and do.
T’will be everything Ottawa, nothing St. John’s.
Mark my words what I’m saying is true.
That Smallwood’s a traitor and you’ll see the day
When the people will stand up and shout
That he’s not worth the powder to blow him to hell,
And his friends will be kicking him out.”
But nobody heeded what Grandfather said
And nobody heeded his tears.
They called him a babbling, senile old man
Who was exaggerating his fears.
They all went their way with a smile in their hearts,
Hoping only good fortune would fall.
But I wondered in time would they look back and say:
“Wasn’t Grandfather right after all?”

I heard about this new innovation on the radio one night while listening to BBC I think it was.
It is a new design chicken coop for urban use.
I think this is a great idea to educate the masses that their food doesn't come from styrofoam trays.
Their site is well well worth checking out. They have a full tutorial on how to raise chickens.

Dave Paddon's voice from the Independant
I sure hope The Independant does this.

A chart for the
inside-the-overpass crowd
Dear editor,
As a Townie, I often feel shamefully
ignorant about the fishery. It seems
to be in a horrible mess and in dire
need of fixing. The outports might as
well be on the other side of the world
as far as my knowledge level goes! I
suspect I’m not alone and it’s just not
good enough that so much of the population
is uninformed on such a vital
matter.
With the above in mind, I thought I
would make a suggestion — or
maybe I’m asking a favour. Do you
think it would be possible to publish
an “overview” of the entire fishery
structure? I suppose I’m thinking in
terms of some type of flow chart —
harvesting, processing, regulations,
management (zones), species, foreign
influence, geography (including location
of various fish plants, dependant
communities), and any other relevant
information.
Ideally it would be a two-page
spread that I (and I hope others) could
keep and be able to refer to when
needed.
I think you would be doing a great
service to us inside-the-overpass
crowd who may not depend on the
fishery but who are nevertheless
linked to it simply by being Newfoundlanders
and Labradorians. I am
convinced that a viable fishery is possible
but that it probably won’t look
anything like the present setup. I
don’t know what the answer is but I’d
sure like to have something to base
opinions on!

Rural Good news initiatives by Provincial govt
I was doing a bit of surfing in the Provincial govt press release web site and decided to aggregate some of the more telling ones. Mostly Enviromental impact studies for business start ups, Fish Aquaculture seed money, Education initiatives, cultural initiatives, and road work etc.
Sorry the link doesn't explain what each is but you can glean the general content by the title fishaq, edu, TCR, env, etc.
This set of links goes back as far as jan 2006. I only bookmarked those links I deemed as good for Rural NL because I was looking for evidence that this govt was supporting rural NL contrary to what some people would have you believe.
I was beginning to believe some of the naysayers about this govt's neglect of rural NL. But I was torn because I knew that there were alot of announcements that were specific to the development and support of rural NL.
The thing about alot if not most of these announcements is that they aren't immediate gratification. They are mostly seed money or infrastucture upgrades that will take time to come to fruition.
Judge for yourself by following some of the links.
Boy are we spread out over alot of territory.

Workshop explores opportunities in housing, wood products
From readng this article it would seem they are still thinking inside the one house box.
I did a blog somewhere or suggestion about modular housing being a good opportunity for NL lumber with it's great hurricane resistant properties. I may have also mentioned the fact that there are 6.5 Billion people in the world.
Modular could mean two things for this market.
One single family dwellings prefab'd. ok for North american but doesn't take into account Urban Sprawl which is becoming a problem. Nor the fact that if everyone in the world lived like we do here in north america we would need 4 planets to supply the resources necessary.
Modular has to be a very important part of design for transport purposes.
Two Modular would also mean a house or housing complex can be added to.
So how do you make modular housing complexes prefabed?
Start with a duplex fourplex concept IMHO.
Look at doing some sort of storied vertical design complex.
When I was in Greece they build the first floor to start with but design it so that other floors can be added later. Rebar sticking out of the roof.
I find those new styrofoam block cement filled design housing very interesting for a modular concept especially for Europe and Africa. It's quick and efficient with great stability sound proofing and expandibility properties.
Sea Containers could be looked as for it's stackability properties.
When I was in Vukovar the former YugoSlavia the Swedes showed up with a Sea Can that they had modified as an amenity cubicle. Apparently they were stuck at the loading dock for quite some time and modified this Sea can for their own purposes.
I'll give a brief description of how it was laid out.
In the end was a Sauna about 10 foot deep, then there was a shower cubicle around 15-20 feet, 10 foot abolution area, and finally there was a kitchen dining table set up with counters cupboards water coolers fridge and stove. All parts were the width of a sea can obviously 8-10 feet unsure.
The entire unite was wired and plumbed all they had to do was drop it on the ground plug in a water supply and generator and you had a little piece of luxury and convienience in the middle of a war torn country.
Bonus was you could fill the sides of the sea can with sand and you had a half decent bomb shelter good for small arms and light weaponry.
I'll try and do some further research and add links and photos later.

Very interesting debate going on over here about how the media can be used to spin the Governments agenda.
The news media is a funny animal. In its claims of journalistic integrity it is non-the-less influenced by agenda and bias. The weeds of opinion propagate from it and are nurtured at the womb of public opinion where it grows. In the public eye truth is elusive. Media broadcasts to its audience blindly, not knowing who is listening or how they will respond. Like coins thrown on a sidewalk we cannot tell who will pick it up or how it will be used.
This is why it has become increasingly important to view with a critical eye. To take pause and look at the stuff under a microscope. A great deal of it is fast-food for the mind, quick and immediately gratifying but in the long run not altogether healthy.
Consider a relatively benign article that has just cropped up on the CBC website. It lists housing prices changes from May 2005 to May 2006.
Here is a sampling of average MLS home prices in May (with year-over-year changes in brackets):
* Calgary: $358,214 (+43.6%)
* Edmonton: $242,936 (+22.9%)
* Halifax-Dartmouth: $210,225 (+7.6%)
* Montreal: $219,433 (+8.2%)
* Ottawa: $260,219 (+4.7%)
* Quebec City: $150,324 (+6.9%)
* Regina: $142,147 (+10.3%)
* Saint John, N.B.: $129,844 (+12.3%)
* Saskatoon: $162,279 (+11.5%)
* Nfld. & Lab.: $133,541 (-1.2%)
* Thunder Bay, Ont.: $118,804 (-9.0%)
* Toronto: $365,537 (+5.5%)
* Vancouver: $518,176 (+23.7%)
* Winnipeg: $159,801 (+12.5%)
* Canada: $303,836 (+12.9%)
A quick look at these numbers will tell you one thing. Newfoundland and Labrador was
only one of two places with a decline in housing prices.

Custodial Action is coming BullSHIT
Custodial action coming: Hearn
By ROB ANTLE, The Telegram
Canada has already asserted, to a large degree, management over the Grand Banks, according to federal Fisheries Minister Loyola Hearn. Pictured are fisheries officers boarding a fishing vessel during routine patrols. Hearn says he will soon have progress to report on the issue of custodial management. (Photo Courtesy of Fisheries And Oceans Canada)
Fisheries Minister Loyola Hearn says there is plenty of behind-the-scenes action happening on the custodial management front, and he will soon have progress to report.
-
-
In 2004, a Hearn motion on the issue passed Parliament by a 124-95 count. It called on Ottawa to extend custodial management over the nose and tail and Flemish Cap.
That motion, however, was not binding.
Briefing papers prepared for incoming prime minister Paul Martin in December 2003 warned of many consequences to declaring custodial management.
“In short, unilateral action to take custodial management of the Grand Banks and the Flemish Cap would have legal, political, financial and possible military ramifications,” said those documents, according to the Canadian Press.

More fluff for the uninformed. If they are so intent on taking control of the Continental shelf why haven't they moved on the United Nation Law of the Sea Article 76 which would allow them to do just that?
Why does Ottawa refuse to sign onto a ban the Bottom Dragger/Trawl initiative?
Why hasn't Ottawa funded the Sea Map initiative?
Why does Ottawa still hand out fishing Quotas to foreign countries inside the 200 mile limit?
Why are indiscriminant harvesting practices still sanctioned by Ottawa when they know full well it is destroying the habitat.
Why hasn't Ottawa funded a truth campaign to combat the propagandist campaigns of the Animal Rights Activists against the Legal and Humane Seal Harvest.
Why Hasn't Ottawa changed the Quota system for Sealing to better promote utilizing the entire seal?
Why does Ottawa still maintain it is illegal to shoot seals with a Shot gun when the pellets are now made of steel and pose no threat to food contamination.
Why does Ottawa still allow bycatch with outdated fishing practices?
Why hasn't Ottawa provided the Fishers who FEED CITIES the same support as they have farmers who whine in cities?
Why hasn't ottawa ponied up funding for Aquaculture especially seeing as they re the ones who destroyed the continental shelf fishery?
Why hasn't Ottawa made some ocean reserves, breeding grounds, safe havens?
Why Hasn't Ottawa implemented a program to restore the destroyed habitate with manmade reefs?
Why are Newfoundland/Labradorians still being discriminated against with a token Food,Tourism, recreational fishery for 5 weeks in the worse time of the year when all of the capelin are gone to deep water and hence the cod too. When NS has an 11 month food, tourism,Recreational fishery.
Why does Ottawa still insist on negotiating with NAFO it is our continental shelf even the UN says so all we need to do is claim it?

Canada has already asserted, to a large degree, management over the Grand Banks, according to federal Fisheries Minister Loyola Hearn. Pictured are fisheries officers boarding a fishing vessel during routine patrols. Hearn says he will soon have progress to report on the issue of custodial management. (Photo Courtesy of Fisheries And Oceans Canada)
Fisheries Minister Loyola Hearn says there is plenty of behind-the-scenes action happening on the custodial management front, and he will soon have progress to report.

Dear Say and frog fences
When I was in Germany and frequenting the local Ghastaffs Bars.I had the occasion of attending a wild game diner one night. Actually it was a lone deer community feast.
Apparently they have these Forest Meisters in Germany that are in charge of a specific section of forest area. The Forest Meister FM is in charge of all of the plants, animals and the enviroment in his specific area. So when you get a licence to shoot a deer you go out with the FM and he sits behind you in the tree stand or blind and he points out the animal which you are allowed to shoot. More often than not is a deer with a broken leg or an elderly deer. Then you take the animal back to the local Ghastoff BAR and it is cooked and shared up amongst the local inhabitants.
Now this is probably over simplified and a little blurred because of the quantities of beer consumed but it struck me as a good idea for our native communities to be put in charge of our natural enironment and animals as Forest Meisters.
They were also in charge of thinning the forests to promote faster growth as well as clean the underbrush out but this was discontinued because they discovered that the lack of under brush was impacting on the top soil development. This is why it was so nice to walk in the Black forest because all of the under brush was cleaned up and the forests were thinned to allow for great hiking and Mountain biking.
This would mean full time employment in an area which our native communities and people would have a close connection with. I know if I wanted to go hunting I would want a native to be my guide.
As a side note I noticed these ping pong tablesized fences along the side of the road that channeled small animals specifically frogs to culverts so they wouldn't get killed because they like to sun themslves on the warm pavement. Save a frog kill 1000 mosquitos.

Chairman Williams is dreaming By Averill Baker
I've often wondered about just this topic, and how the numbers really played out as opposed to the perception that is propagated by the uneducated and ignorant. From my studying of the numbers it just seemed far fetched now here it is in Black and white in a publication clearly spelling out the falacies of Equalization and how NL is getting hand outs.
Premier Danny Williams is dreaming in Technicolor if he really believes what he is saying about getting an agreement with the other provinces on equalization for 2007.
First of all, let’s get one thing straight about equalization – this province will get $587-million – that’s about one third of the amount Ottawa gives to New Brunswick in equalization; we get less than half the amount given to Nova Scotia; and less than one third the amount given to Manitoba. Quebec benefits the most from equalization – Quebec gets over half of the entire budget for the nation.
This province gets far less per capita than any of the other three Atlantic Provinces and we are even further behind Manitoba. In fact, Prince Edward Island gets twice as much per capita as this province gets from Ottawa in equalization payments.
So where does this idea come from that we get more equalization money from Ottawa than any other province? The truth is we are fifth lowest of the six provinces that get equalization money from Ottawa.
Two weeks ago, along comes a report from a panel of five experts.
Read the rest of the story of a Lie.

Dust and Dogs in Afghanistan
Dear elected representatives
I was watching the news tonight and it occured to me to put Calcium on the more widely used dirt roads to keep the dust down.
Keeping the dust down will enable our troops to observe their surroundings better for ambushes.
Calcium roads will make it alot easier to spot land mines placed on the road because the disturbed road will stand out.
Calciumed roads will make life that much easier for the trailing vehicles so everyone will be able to observe as well they won't have to breath in that dust.
By keeping the dust down the bad guys won't be able to spot them coming miles away by their dust signature hence plan for an ambush or IED.
Lesss wear and tear on our vehichles and equipment due to dust getting into the moving parts. Probably save on air filters alone the cost of calcium.
How much is a life worth.
Locals would greatly appreciate the lower dust levels.
Dust free roads make for good landing sites for Helicopter in case medivac required.
Calcium can be spread with tankers like Urea is spread on Airfields before an ice storm. Calcium is used to load tires also. It comes like road salt but disolves with water.
Calcium isn't the only thing that could be used to keep the dust down but it is what is acceptable in Canada. Used Oil isn't. Water is but makes for very muddy roads and doesn't last. Diesel works but is enviromentally unfriendly where there is water.
Waste byproduct from Bio diesel would work as well I think.
Calcium lasts a good month depending on the use and enviroment from my experience.
Ugggh flash backs of dusty Wainright and convoys. Had to be there.
Help foil IED Improvised Explosive Devices and ambushes
Explosive sniffing dogs as trail breakers. In specific areas.
Remote controlled off road cars equiped with Explosive sniffing equipment.
Unsure here but I think Muslims have something against dogs as well. Probably smell these Talibans a mile away what with them living of the country in the hills.
Please no disrespect mean't, anyone would smell living of the land in a desert enviroment.

Update: Response from The Honourable Gordon J. O'Connor, PC, MP
Minister of National Defence to my email.
Dear Mr. ----:
Thank you for your e-mail of 19 June 2006 concerning your suggestions for the
safety of Canadian Forces personnel deployed in Afghanistan. I regret the delay
in replying.
It is very much appreciated when members of the public show their support for
the Canadian Forces personnel who put their lives daily in harm's way.
Improvised explosive device detection, safety, and the security of our forces
are all high priorities in the Department of National Defence (DND);
consequently, your ideas have been reviewed in detail.
Your idea to employ calcium to suppress the dust as well as to identify opened
routes is interesting, and the Department is investigating it further. The
working environment in the Kandahar region is harsh, with daily dust storms that
sweep through the valleys moving immense quantities of dust. However, I
understand that calcium would not combat this overriding situation, since roads
would be covered daily and the calcium would be ineffective. Nonetheless, DND is
investigating this idea to be employed on-camp as well as in limited, deliberate
use off-camp.
In response to your suggestion to employ dogs as trailbreakers, Canadian Forces
personnel already use dogs in theatre. Primarily employed in camp-force
protection, the dogs are only used in limited capacity "outside the wire" as
they must be utilised in a secure environment.
Regarding your suggestion to equip all-terrain vehicles with explosive-detection
equipment, the Canadian Forces has a system in theatre known as the Improvised
Landmine Detection System that detects surface and buried mines. It was brought
into service approximately four years ago.
Thank you once again for writing. I appreciate your support of our men and women
in uniform and trust the information I have provided is of assistance.
Sincerely,
The Honourable Gordon J. O'Connor, PC, MP
Minister of National Defence
Good response. I can totally understand the logic and thought that went into this response. I feel bad to have wasted his time. It is just so hard knowing my fellow Canadians are in harms way and there is little to nothing I can do to help.
Substitute Farmers for Fishers and this speech would apply to Atlantic Canada
You could also throw in the fact that DFO and the Feds are ultimately responsible for the mismangement, destruction and bartering away of the livelihoods of Atlantic Canadians.
Ok so maybe we can't parade up and down sussex drive in our boats but we can Blocade the Saint Lawrence Seaway interrupting goods from entering the Empire of Ontario as well as the United States.

World parenting
So by rewarding these rogue nations and the people who inhabit them aren't we making a precident.
Think of it as parenting if you reward a misbehaing child for behaving badly aren't you telling his brother sister and neighborhood children that if they behave badly they will receive help and support to rebuild their self destructed countries?
On the other hand what do you do ignore the misbehaving country and hope that he doesn't come back to rob or destroy your house country?
Treating all of your children equally and consistently has to be one of the solid principles of parenting. So by allowing Isreal to have Nuclear weapons but it's enemies not to the world as a parent is being hypocritical.
So if we as a world parent want to be eqaul fair and consistant we should negotiate with Israel to have them remove their nuclear capability with a program whereby they are supported in doing so. IE: Guarantees to support them against their enemies and their enemies won't get Nuclear weapons.
Israel is the crux of the dispute in the middle east and it is Israel what needs to be inoled with any negotiations of ceasefire whatever it takes.
Sorry not very clear in my thoughts I guess I'm not a very good parent Oh well what a boring place it would be if we were all the same.
I think they should have kept the ten commandments in schools. Warp them early.

Quoting Harper on the fishery
How does this picture of fish hidden in the crews quarters stand on the Abuse it you lose it Meter?
But Conservative leader Stephen Harper said the government's tough new approach to protecting the fishery is just playing politics before an election.
"I think this is a pre-election show and if they were serious about this as a policy they would have established it as a practice over the last several years," Harper said.

Boo Hoo Heather Mills
Heather Mills McCartney is planning legal action against those "intent on damaging her reputation" once she finalizes her divorce from Paul McCartney, her lawyers said Tuesday.
Just weeks before they announced their separation, Heather Mills McCartney and Paul McCartney came to Canada to protest the annual seal hunt. (Tom Hanson/Canadian Press)
Mills McCartney, 38, has been at the centre of a media firestorm since May, when the onetime fashion model and McCartney, 63, announced plans to separate after four years of marriage.
Last weekend, the British newspaper News of the World reported allegations that she had worked as a prostitute when she was in her 20s.
Other coverage included an article in London's Sun newspaper featuring nude photos of Mills McCartney that had originally appeared in a German publication.
-
-
"Seeing that so many inaccurate stories have been written at the moment about Heather and myself, all I can ask people to do is not believe them and understand that most of what is coming out is made up and entirely false," the former Beatle said in a statement released May 18.
I guess going onto Larry King Live and telling the world lies about the Canadian Seal Hunt should be forgotten.
The fact that upon coming to Canada to protest, you thought the Seals were an endangered species when the reality is there are more than 6,000,000 million seals.
No sympathy here you started throwing the rocks from inside your glass house.

Why I will only vote independant or a local interest party from now on.
OBSERVATIONS ON THE EXISTING ELECTORAL PROCESS From Complacent Nation
Background
The following is a dissertation regarding the political process, the political animals and their inter-relationship with the political process, (with particular emphasis on the western form of democratic elections), and how to prevent subversion of the system to the benefit of vested political, business, and religious interests.
Section 1. The Present Political Electoral Process.
All democracies have "various" forms of political suffrage, based upon a registered electorate, but often each system is varied to suit existing status quos and/or religious preference. The Canadian parliamentary system is based upon the British system. However, whilst in Britain party unity is ensured by the ruling party's Chief Whip, there have been important differences instituted by the Canadian Federal Liberal Party, to change the system to concentrate power in the hands of the Prime Minister and the PMO's office. To ensure that the party rank and file perform as decreed, the selection of each riding's candidate has to be vetted/agreed with the party nomination papers being signed by the Prime Minister. (Note. This was demonstrated by the ousting of Shiela Copps from her Hamilton safe seat, both because she ran against Paul Martin in the selection race for leader of the Federal Liberals, and also as she was a Chrétien loyalist ).
All political neophytes enter politics in the belief that their input is required as a representative of their local electorate and that they, as an elected representative, are required to feed this input to the party, as the party leaders need to know what the electorate want/expect. They quickly realise this error, and that they are there just to make up the party numbers and that the ruling party's agenda/manifesto is compiled by the party's inner circle. The promises made to the proletariat by all parties, before an election, bears no resemblance to the direction that the particular party intends to pursue, and has nothing to do whatever with either the wishes of the electorate or whether the proposed actions are of benefit to the country or the tax payers, just as long as the party benefits.
The motivation of all political parties is to get into power, and once ensconced, hold onto it by any means, including hoodwinking/ outright lying to the electorate, and "buying" votes, by either subsidising local businesses to prevent plant closures and/or instituting public works. This situation causes deep frustration amongst the voters, as they realise that their input is not required, just their vote to get a party "bum" on a seat in the House. This feeling of powerlessness by the proles, is one of the main reasons in the decrease number of voters exercising their political mandate, with each successive government getting into power with less and less votes. This malaise afflicting the voters was emphasised in the U.S. presidential election, just completed, when many people decided not to vote, as, "It is a waste of time, as they lie just to get elected".
All political systems must be re-designed, so as to reduce the effect of human venality, with the propensity to circumvent any checks.
Read the rest here at Complacent Nation. He goes on to suggest some recommendations for political reform.

A Canada Strong and Free part III: Rebalanced and Revitalized
“Rebalance and Revitalize Canada” Manning & Harris Say
Montreal, June 06, 2006 - Fraser Institute Senior Fellows Preston Manning and Mike Harris today unveiled a series of steps to address Canada’s democratic deficit and make it the best governed federation in the world.
The proposals outlined in their third volume of the Canada Strong and Free series of policy papers include making government officials legally accountable for purposefully breaking the public trust, greater democratic participation, and rebalanced federal/provincial powers.
“Canada as a nation was built on a vision of peace, order and good government. Today we largely enjoy peace, we take pride in order, but good government remains the exception not the rule,” said Harris.
“It is time to make a break with the past,” added Manning. “We are proposing simple and long overdue measures that will rebalance and revitalize the way we govern ourselves.”
Specifically, Manning and Harris call for:
Revitalized government through increased transparency and accountability
* A Canadian-style “Sarbanes-Oxley” act for government. Company officials who break the trust of shareholders can suffer strong legal penalties; government officials who break the public trust should now know the law of the land applies to them as well.
* Develop and publish an annual Report Card on government to grade government performance by measurable standards.
Revitalized democracy with increased participation and freer votes
* Create citizens assemblies and referendums to give the public direct involvement in democratic reform.
* Revitalize our democracy with freer votes in Parliament and legislatures so the people’s representatives can better represent the people who elect them.
Rebalanced Confederation to allow for greater flexibility and efficiency
* Full withdrawal of the federal government from provincial areas of responsibility, particularly education, health care, welfare, and child care, vacating equivalent tax room to the provinces.
* Invigoration of the Council of the Federation as a meeting place to develop strong inter-provincial cooperation and agreements.
Rebalanced federal government checks and balances
* Utilize a democratically elected Senate and a reformed committee structure in Parliament to monitor and check the power of the Cabinet.
* Rehabilitate our Constitution’s Notwithstanding Clause so the people and their representatives can block overreaching by courts.

Wayne over at Table mountains does a much better job than I ever could of describing the upcoming events surrounding the 90th anniversary of the battle of Somme at Beaumont Hamel.

"DANNY MOVES WEST"
UNDER PROPOSED NEW RESETTLEMENT PROGRAM
Excuse me Premier, don't mean to upset the summer festivities but while you were on your equalization visit with your fellow Premiers, Tory MP Brian Jean was proposing a federal government program to move unemployed Newfoundlanders and Labradorians to Alberta.
Where were our members? Well rookie Scott was playing for the home team in France as our well seasoned representative on the seal harvest. He just voted with the Tories on Afghanistan right? Well a trip for a trip, his sounds more fun though.
Did not see anything Bill Matthews said, he was busy doing PR for Hearn. Byrne I guess was in the middle of taking flack for asking for equality for Newfoundlanders and Labradorians, as his past government saw fit to do nothing. Does not make what he says wrong though.
I don't know where Todd is.
Rest of piece plus commentary.

International Promises made, Promises broken
It struck me tonight as I was watching the news in between the hockey game and they were talking about young Canadian women and men moving into another area in Afgan Called Forward Operating Base Martello.
They showed locals displaying their new hand held radios wind up and solar power at least some thought went into that since batteries are probably a luxury. I wonder though is there any reception in those areas? Hate to rain on your parade but these questions need to be asked.
They are talking about rousting out the taliban from this area. Well news flash the taliban is probably the only employer or source of income in those types of areas which is why the taliban are there to begin with.
You can't just expect to march in drive out the taliban and expect the locals to raise you up on their shoulders for driving away their employers husbands and children perhaps. It's all about saving face everyone needs a way to win here. Bit of topic oh well noone reads this shit anyway.
One thing did strike me though and that was what looked like a leader of sorts if nothing else an outspoken Afgan not quite an elder more like in prime of his life 40-50 years. He made a comment that Paraphrasing sorry "When will Canada honor their promises to drill wells?"
Now to us we may not notice the importance of water because we are used to having so much of it but over there ever ounce of water has to be hand pumped hand delivered day in and day out it takes up a majority of their time just foraging for water and it isn't even good water most times.
We really need to go back in time to the early 1900 to understand where their Afgan society is in alot of cases I hate to pigeon hole because ther are bright spots like there are everywhere IE St John's in Newfoundland and Labradors case.
But for one of their elders to make a statement like that to a television reporter IMHO is a big deal and needs to be addressed immedately or our troops are going to be in a world of hurt. It was at the tail end of the broadcast and I'm thinking lucky to have even made it into the broadcast.
I'll just give you an example of a news story I heard on international news the other night. 7 Afgan POLICE MEN were shot and killed I believe it was in their sleep by none other than 5 other AFGAN POLICE who once the dirty deed was done stole their weapons and delivered the guns and themselves to the taliban. Now that is scary when you consider the screening that one would like to think goes into hiring police, and our troops are working side by side at times with these same police and Afgan army. You won't hear about that on CBC I'll bet.
Anyway back to the gift that keeps on giving Water or in this case a well. I couldn't help but notice the derrick drill rig that the OILERS enter Rexall stadium through and thinking that who better to drill water wells than Albertans. They have lots of money they have quite a bit of military infrastructure and hence federal funding unlike NL which has none to speak of. They have the expertise in drilling deep wells albeit oil but drilling and geology are the same for both.
We had three wells drilled in Somalia down to somewher like 200 plus feet with no luck.
Their oil rig workers are pretty rough and tumble bunch unafraid of a few old taliban and may very well be ex military in alot of cases. So they would know not to pick up anything shiny LOL if they know whats best for them.
Could even adopt a town or something like that especially with afgan communities in some of our provinces. Govt could double any community or organizational donations as was done with the Tsunami relief. Challenge other provinces to pay for other wells. Water is what is needed for these people to become undependant on the taliban and the drug trade because make no mistake the drug trade is what fuels these insurgents etc that and dehumaization so the adopt a village thing would work two ways.
Back to the radio thing maybe if we could rebroadcast some of our Afgan community radio broadcasts over there it would help humanize us INFIDELS. Keep your friends close and your enemies closer.
There is also a product you can add to soil to make it retain water for longer periods of time I forget the name I believe it was something like bituminum or something. Great for gardens albeit expensive but if your going to remove a livlihood you've got to be able to replace it or expect the reprecussions.
Actually maybe biodiesel could even be an option for Afgan. LOL make it out of the opium.
I believe the dutch are in Afgan good troops they were with us in Eritrea/Ethiopia. Once these wells are drilled there would be no better people to ask about putting wind mill pump onto it than the dutch.
Remember that commercial on CBC where they are designing a water pump and have to go to the mormons to get a simple design that is easily fixed and maintained.
If you control the water you control the prosperity and the people. You also have a location to gather intelligence. Put wells in camps ? dangerous for suicide bombers but a pipe that runs out a safe distance would be good. We would be considered life givers.
Pee is water and shouldn't be wasted in a country like Afganistan.
I forget what it is called but there is also a method of getting water from under mountains by digging tunnels deep within the mountain saw it on a show one time from over there somewhere.
Pedal bicycles are a great improvement from walking the mechanical advantage is phenominal for a country like Afgan. There is some program where by they recycle bicycle gearing to give mechanical advantage for man powered machinery like gris mills etc.
Howstuffworks.com would be a great source of info for Afgan people.
Planning for famine and irrigation would require reservoirs piping or aquaducts etc.
Clover as a ground cover water retention vegetation needed to catch leeside of mountains water.

Congratulations Oilers on your win 2-1 tonight. I really don't expect them to win though just not there. First to the puck big ice point shots don't work us top circle in three man 5 point star.
Oh well good luck and you've done well getting this far IMHO great D, clean hitting once upon a time, some of the best trap of all the NHL once upon a time. The week of really made them lose their groove.
Your playing with Canadian lives breaking promises in a location like Afganistan Mr Harper.
Sorry about the lack of supporting liks and info. Afgans will probably get their promises kept before fellow Canadian in Newfoundland/Labrador will.
