International Promises made, Promises broken

It struck me tonight as I was watching the news in between the hockey game and they were talking about young Canadian women and men moving into another area in Afgan Called Forward Operating Base Martello.

They showed locals displaying their new hand held radios wind up and solar power at least some thought went into that since batteries are probably a luxury. I wonder though is there any reception in those areas? Hate to rain on your parade but these questions need to be asked.

They are talking about rousting out the taliban from this area. Well news flash the taliban is probably the only employer or source of income in those types of areas which is why the taliban are there to begin with.

You can't just expect to march in drive out the taliban and expect the locals to raise you up on their shoulders for driving away their employers husbands and children perhaps. It's all about saving face everyone needs a way to win here. Bit of topic oh well noone reads this shit anyway.

One thing did strike me though and that was what looked like a leader of sorts if nothing else an outspoken Afgan not quite an elder more like in prime of his life 40-50 years. He made a comment that Paraphrasing sorry "When will Canada honor their promises to drill wells?"

Now to us we may not notice the importance of water because we are used to having so much of it but over there ever ounce of water has to be hand pumped hand delivered day in and day out it takes up a majority of their time just foraging for water and it isn't even good water most times.

We really need to go back in time to the early 1900 to understand where their Afgan society is in alot of cases I hate to pigeon hole because ther are bright spots like there are everywhere IE St John's in Newfoundland and Labradors case.

But for one of their elders to make a statement like that to a television reporter IMHO is a big deal and needs to be addressed immedately or our troops are going to be in a world of hurt. It was at the tail end of the broadcast and I'm thinking lucky to have even made it into the broadcast.

I'll just give you an example of a news story I heard on international news the other night. 7 Afgan POLICE MEN were shot and killed I believe it was in their sleep by none other than 5 other AFGAN POLICE who once the dirty deed was done stole their weapons and delivered the guns and themselves to the taliban. Now that is scary when you consider the screening that one would like to think goes into hiring police, and our troops are working side by side at times with these same police and Afgan army. You won't hear about that on CBC I'll bet.

Anyway back to the gift that keeps on giving Water or in this case a well. I couldn't help but notice the derrick drill rig that the OILERS enter Rexall stadium through and thinking that who better to drill water wells than Albertans. They have lots of money they have quite a bit of military infrastructure and hence federal funding unlike NL which has none to speak of. They have the expertise in drilling deep wells albeit oil but drilling and geology are the same for both.
We had three wells drilled in Somalia down to somewher like 200 plus feet with no luck.
Their oil rig workers are pretty rough and tumble bunch unafraid of a few old taliban and may very well be ex military in alot of cases. So they would know not to pick up anything shiny LOL if they know whats best for them.

Could even adopt a town or something like that especially with afgan communities in some of our provinces. Govt could double any community or organizational donations as was done with the Tsunami relief. Challenge other provinces to pay for other wells. Water is what is needed for these people to become undependant on the taliban and the drug trade because make no mistake the drug trade is what fuels these insurgents etc that and dehumaization so the adopt a village thing would work two ways.

Back to the radio thing maybe if we could rebroadcast some of our Afgan community radio broadcasts over there it would help humanize us INFIDELS. Keep your friends close and your enemies closer.

There is also a product you can add to soil to make it retain water for longer periods of time I forget the name I believe it was something like bituminum or something. Great for gardens albeit expensive but if your going to remove a livlihood you've got to be able to replace it or expect the reprecussions.

Actually maybe biodiesel could even be an option for Afgan. LOL make it out of the opium.

I believe the dutch are in Afgan good troops they were with us in Eritrea/Ethiopia. Once these wells are drilled there would be no better people to ask about putting wind mill pump onto it than the dutch.
Remember that commercial on CBC where they are designing a water pump and have to go to the mormons to get a simple design that is easily fixed and maintained.

If you control the water you control the prosperity and the people. You also have a location to gather intelligence. Put wells in camps ? dangerous for suicide bombers but a pipe that runs out a safe distance would be good. We would be considered life givers.

Pee is water and shouldn't be wasted in a country like Afganistan.

I forget what it is called but there is also a method of getting water from under mountains by digging tunnels deep within the mountain saw it on a show one time from over there somewhere.

Pedal bicycles are a great improvement from walking the mechanical advantage is phenominal for a country like Afgan. There is some program where by they recycle bicycle gearing to give mechanical advantage for man powered machinery like gris mills etc.

Howstuffworks.com would be a great source of info for Afgan people.

Planning for famine and irrigation would require reservoirs piping or aquaducts etc.

Clover as a ground cover water retention vegetation needed to catch leeside of mountains water.

Congratulations Oilers on your win 2-1 tonight. I really don't expect them to win though just not there. First to the puck big ice point shots don't work us top circle in three man 5 point star.

Oh well good luck and you've done well getting this far IMHO great D, clean hitting once upon a time, some of the best trap of all the NHL once upon a time. The week of really made them lose their groove.

Your playing with Canadian lives breaking promises in a location like Afganistan Mr Harper.

Sorry about the lack of supporting liks and info. Afgans will probably get their promises kept before fellow Canadian in Newfoundland/Labrador will.
