Sea Map action by Mr Harpers administration

Local Company Lands Federal Contract
July 12, 2006

A St.John's company has won a $2 million contract to help provide ocean data to the federal government as part of Canada's efforts to define its jurisdictional boundaries offshore. Fugro GeoSurveys plans to do survey work on the Continental Slope off the Grand Banks and in the South Labrador Sea.

Sea Map

United nations Law of the Sea UNCLOS.
Article 76.

Hopefully it isn't to late because the UNCLOS is supposed to be ratified within 10 years I believe. The majority of the countries inoled have already ratified and Canada was about to under the Mulroney administration with John Crosbie in charge of the fishery portfolio but they were ousted and Cretiens Liberals reneged on the commitment.

Custodial Management and Joint management are just diversions the real prize is the continental shelf and according to UNCLOS is is ours all we need to do is ratify, but the RATS in OTTAWA don't want to put at jeopardy their back room deals and trade agreements in which they bartered the continental shelf off to provide trade concessions for Ontario. As well know combined with Quebec has a 60% say in the goings on of the country. Ontario 106 seats Quebec 75 out of a total of 308 which used to be 268 hence we are getting marginalized all the time.

I would call this a step in the right direction and a feather in Mr Harpers hat for Atlantic Canada.

Update: CTV article, Canada orders survey to map continental shelf

http://www.ctv.ca/servlet/ArticleNews/story/CTVNews/20060720/survey060720/20060720?hub=Canada

Updated Update: This initative will do nothing to protect the fish stocks on our continental shelf because according to UNCLOS the only thing outside the 200 mile EEZ that will fall under our jurisdiction is what lies on the sea bed and under it jnot in the water or air above the sea bed. That doesn't include migratory fish like the COD. That is why Canada signed onto the UNFA United Nations Fish Agreement and has tried to control and limit the TAC taken by foreign Draggers through NAFO. Which we all know has has less than stellar results.

How? I certainly hope Harper didn't intervene in a competitive bid process.
