Tourism/Recreational/Food fishery
Haven't really decided if this is a good thing or not yet but here are some talking points from VOCM commentary and my own thoughts.
You can fool some of the people some of the time.
You can fool most of the people most of the time.
But you can't fool all of the people all of time.
Kids will be able to go fishing of the warf without fear of being thrown in jail.
Timing is great since whale watching is over Capelin are gone and the Ice bergs have melted. August is best weather in NL IMHO.
12 mile could be partly a safety thing what with line of sight on the water only being 10 miles with small boats being involved.
15 fish max per boat will ensure no 12 foot aluminum boats will have 6 people in them.
Return of the status Quo haven't gained anything other than what was taken away from us.
Abuse it you lose it.
Tarring all population with the same brush as is supposed to be used for criminals.
Treated discriminated as a people with threat that any abuse by a few will merit punishment for all.
Why haven't foreigners lost it they have abused it.
Why hasn't DFO and the federal government lost it they abused it for foreign trade concessions to boister Ontarios foreign trade.
Rogue ships pumping bilge water with oil and foreign species haven't lost it?
Second class Canadians Nova Scotia has a food/recreation/tourist/ fishery for 11 months of the year.
NS throws back cod because full of worms from seal feces, Haddock main food fishery? Vocm listener comment. Just confirms NS'ians shouldn't be inolved in control of ground fishery.
Supposed to be innocent until proven guilty. Shows the mentality of Ottawa towards NL'ians.
Why should we have to prove ourselves we weren't in charge of handing out Quotas or setting the destructive fishing practices which have destroyed not only the stocks but the habitat which is necessary for the stocks to recover.
Faith in Humanity of NL'ians
Don't look a gift horse in the mouth.
Sentinel fishery because Ottawa doesn't have political will to fund fishery science.
Black market abuse.
Abuse of quotas.
No employment poverty.
Survival feed family sell for clothing lack of work federal presence. No military bases, no high level buracrats.
Highest poverty rates in Canada.
Illiteracy, Hunger
Highgrading going to happen with hook and line. Throwing back of small fish to catch larger ones.
Lost Gill nets are land mines of the sea. Crab destroy fish caught in gill nets because they are anchored to the bottom. Draggers destroy bottom.
Hook trawl lines can be selective with hook size bait type and location. Sea bird and by catch practically eliminated with dyed bait and unfrozen bait so it won't float.
Fish will be fresher because a hook doesn't kill fish as fast as a gill net. Lost hook trawl lines don't become mine field for 100 years.
Giving NL'ians enough rope knowing full well there are going to be a few individuals who will hang themselves thus in accordance with Ottawas mentality Abuse it you lose it we will abuse it thus lose it because of a few individuals.
DFO Federal government still hasn't accepted responsibility for their mismangement of the continental shelf.
Illegal actions can't be rationalized. Lobby for change or make those responsible accountable for their actions.
Humane Society commercial is a blatent propaganda campaign to sway NL'ians. If you repeat something often enough people will begin to believe it. Especially if noone is presenting the other side of the arguement and disputing the facts. Our fishermen are not thieves. They are not stealing from the fishermen. Trying to divide and conquer our people.
I do commend Mr Hearn though for his faith in the Humanity of NL'ians because it is obvious from his statement that there were those who made the arguement that NL'ians can't be trusted with a recreation/tourism/food fishery.
It is a testiment to his powers of persuasion and faith in the NL people that he convinced the naysayers that we are a responsible people and we weren't responsible for the destruction of the continental shelfs eco system.

Being bought of with our own resources and money once again. We really are studid Newfies if we let this go.
