Captain of our own destiny
The worse Newfoundland-Labradors economy does the happier Ottawa is. Because the more products NL produces the more Marine Atlantic ferry trips that have to be made and since the ferry is run and paid for by the Federallies in accordance with the 1949 terms of union they have a vested interest in ensuring NL's economy doesn't prosper as well as it's population declines.

That's an interesting take Expat. But your forgetting that with the prices the Federal government are charging for a ferry crossing they are probably making money, well maybe not because it is a federal agency and we all know how notoriously inefficient they can be. But if a private company were to run Marine Atlantic I'm pretty sure the prices would drop and the service would increase.
But like your title says we need to be the captains/masters of our own destiny and that would mean that the federal govt would have to hand over control of Marine Atlantic and still continue to fund it while we run it.
