NL Patriot or Politician first?
I'm not impressed with our Politicians silence on NL federal issues. It really makes you wonder what are their priorities? Politician or Patriot? Personal agenda or represent the people who elected them?
If their first priority is politician one would have to gather that their aspirations are the federal arena and as such will never stand up for NL interests because angering Ottawa would conflict with their personal aspirations.
I did throw a bouqet out to St John's Mayor, Senator Ethel Cochrane and a few others but all in all the only advocacy on the part of our politicians for NL interests as of late has been the signing of the Gander Weather station petition by Premier Williams. As minute as this gesture was it was a stand and be counted gesture for the benefit of NL.
I won't go into the John Efford Federal leanings, because personally I don't think it deserves a second thought other than to say an election is coming!
If you haven't guessed the main issue at hand would have to be the fishery or lack there off. Sure it is a federal jurisdiction but it is also the jurisdiction of our politicians to represent their people on the federal level. Whether that be from Provincial or federal politicians.
Now to use the chain of command responsibilities for lack of a better term.
People express views and concerns to both Federal and Proincial representatives.
Provincial politicians express views demand action from federal representatives.
Federal representatives express views of their electorate to rest of cabinet and the federal government.
Reality is though that with only 7 seats out of 307 were not going anywhere fast, if anywhere at all, in the near future through the political process. Our Political representatives would be better of supporting or initiating legal proceedings to obtain results.
Any legal proceedings should only be entered into with the knowledge that they will have to go through the canadian system to get to the international courts for a fair and unbiased decision.
