Cashing in on the half an hour later on an Island in the sea!
Since Newfoundland is the only location in the world to be a half hour off from everyone else. we are in a great position to capitalize on this by producing national news to be broadcast all over the world on the half hour.
Just a thought.
Just a thought.

Nope. Southern Labrador, Iran, Afghanistan, India, Burma, South Australia, and the Northern Territory are all in half-hour time zones as well.
There's no geographical reason for the province or any part of it to be on a half-hour zone. The standard meridian for GMT+4 is 60 degrees west longitude, which is pretty well the centre line of the province. Even St. John's is west of the meridian (52.5 West) which is the eastern limit of GMT+4, and which would be the standard for a half-hour time zone. The rest of Newfoundland is, of course, to the west of St. John's. The entire province, considered geographically and astronomically, should be on Atlantic Time.
Suriname used to be in the same half-hour time zone as Newfoundland Time, but they got rid of it ten or more years ago. Newfoundland should do the same, and certainly southern Labrador should get rid of the half-hour difference, which becomes especially absurd in the summer.

CNN Headline News does this from Atlanta, which is on a regular time zone, every 30 minutes.

Thanks WJM I didn't suspect we were the only ones on the half hour. In fact I believe there are even islands or small countries who are 15 minutes off.
So is it beneficial or a hinderance? If I'm reading your comments correctly you think it is a hinderance.
Like you mentioned, it isn't even the entire province that is on the half hour but rather western Labrador is on Atlantic time?
Are we that big we need to have our province divided even more by having two time zones in our province?
Would it be better to go with the Atlantic time zone for all or get rid of the Half hour and make it a full hour specifically for all of NL?
I tend to think your right we should go with the Atlantic time zone for all of NL!
This is a great time to contact your MP and let your views be known. What with the US changing their daylight savings times and Ontario and Manitoba? looking to follow suit.
My blog doesn't seem to be well enough informed to email to Poll iticians yet. It may never be but I'll keep it on the back burner.
If you decide to write an email to the poll iticians please let me know. I will probably forward it myself.

A few, Nepal I think, and some others.

It's neither, it's just not necessary.

Most of Labrador follows Atlantic Time: West, North, Southeast from Norman Bay south. Most of the population of Labrador is on Atlantic, not Newfoundland, Time.
Are we that big we need to have our province divided even more by having two time zones in our province?
Nope. Which is why the whole province should be on the time zone which makes the most sense from a geographical perspective: Atlantic Time.
Would it be better to go with the Atlantic time zone for all or get rid of the Half hour and make it a full hour specifically for all of NL?
A full hour (GMT+3) for all NL would be utterly absurd. Labrador extends almost two full time zones west of the meridian for GMT+3! This doesn't make sense for Newfoundland, which lies entirely west of 52.5 degrees, let alone for the whole province!
This is a great time to contact your MP and let your views be known.
What do MPs have to do with this?

Why would you email a blog to an MP?

OK WJM I digress. After looking into this matter some more Your right!
It's actually even worst than the 1/2 hour when you consider the biggest trading time zones are in the Eastern time zone Ontario, Quebec, Boston, New York 1 1/2 hours difference.
We actually are losing 3 hours of business being 1 1/2 hours different.
1 1/2 in the morning and 1 1/2 in the evening. Which leaves us with 5 hours out of a normal 8 hour work day. Now take out 1 hour from each time zone because we are off set and your left with 3 hours in which to do business.
And like you pointed out there is absolutely no reason for it when you consider than NFLD is within the Atlantic time zone anyway.
Really when you consider our northern latitude position and the fact that above the artic circle there are really only two time zones Night in the winter and Day in the summer are we really affected that much by daylight savings time?
Yes once again your right.
"Why would I email my MP"
It is the proincial MHA's that could and should affect this change. To promote better trade and communications with the rest of Canada especially Ontario Quebec Boston And New York.
Especially since our Premier has signed on to cut red tape. This 1/2 hour time Warp has to be the biggest roll of red tape holding NL back of all!
