More NL outside the box business ideas

More NL outside the box job ideas

Make and post Hydro maps of all inland water ways. By Post I mean laminated bill board at boat launches. I saw too many poor visitors beat their boats up because either the dangers were not marked or no hydro maps were readily available.

Great job for DFO since there are no fish to protect (

FISH

Make or test Fish cakes or fish cakes pogo stick. Crab pogo stick, Lobster pogo stick, etc

Market toutins, bannock, flavoured toutins or bannock, etc

Fishing net hammocks
-Saw one once time that spanned 100’s of feet through the trees.

Dulse from sea weed
-It’s a maritime treat

Trees value added

Chip trees
-Easier to transport
-Make chip board
-Less wasted tree
-OSB I beam joists manufactured joists
- Either trucks tilt to dump or platform tilts to dump Irving plant in NB does this.
-Wood pellets

I realize a lot of our wood doesn’t grow to log sizes but if you chip it then mix with glue and press it would make great OSB. At $20 ¼ 4x8 sheet Value added.

Log homes

Band saw miles. Cheap as dirt and do a great job no waste plus maximum employment. Would need to form a co-op in order access larger markets through combined output.

Prefab houses or sheds that can be shipped folded and erected on site. I drew planes up for this one time. Great for disaster areas. Wiring would be a bit tricky? Maybe just exterior walls and roof trusses etc. They would have to be tractor trailer transportable IE 8 ft wide? 53 feet long max. Could even go further and build modular types of set up so as that additions could be made.

Juniper is a natural pressure treated lumber similar if not better than BC Cedar looks better to if you can find one straight enough? Silva culture would help here.

Xmas wreaths from tree branches.

Since the advent of the internet I won’t say news papers have become obsolete but it’s getting closer with text phones and PDA Palm pilots. For the masses anyway. IE Stephenville plant closing no recycling global share holder revenues.

Veneer plants
In Germany they used to have lumber yards with piles of logs soaking under water hoses or in ponds to make the veneer peel of better. In Fredericton they are salvaging sunken logs from the river to sell as veneer logs, big money. Hard wood is the first to sink and the best value.
Veneer is used for
-Ply wood
-Laminate flooring Birch
-Dash boards Burl very expensive
-Berry boxes
-One 12 inch log will give you 100 feet of veneer?
-furniture
-Etc

OIL value added
-Plastic and everything made from plastic. Unsure might be by product of gas refining.

Rocks value added
-Pet rocks LOL
-Jewellery Stone tumblers
-NL granite is the best quality granite in the world for making head stones
-Engraved walkway stones
-Carvings soap stone need co-op market internationally best price
-Engraved donation stones pathways
-Labradorite
-Fools gold Newfie Gold if you will as long as the price is right! Scrap on paper if it marks black its fools gold, if it marks Yellow its real gold.

Curbs from granite

Steps from granite

Bog (peat moss) value added
-Oil spill recovery utilization
-Absorball

Animals wild life Value added
-Interpretation signs plaques for tourists
-Zoos I guess some guy went to NL and never saw one moose and claimed our stories of all the moose was a hoax LOL. Downwind at dusk upwind at dawn or vice versa need to think back.
-Even baits for spotting areas? They bait deer for killing why not bait moose for Shooting with Cameras?

Frog fence
I saw this in Germany it looks like a ping pong table net a little higher and it runs along the road and feeds into culverts for the frogs and creatures to cross safely under the road and eat more flies. Great project for volunteer group with funding from Got, Ducks unlimited etc

Mummers festival on George street great cruise ship attraction of season too. Mardie gras type atmosphere. For that matter George street Mardie gras.

Tree planting energy saving program. Sask had or has a program like this where by they either gives away seedlings or sell minimal profit seedlings to plant around your house to save energy. Coniferous on the North (keeps needles all year stops north winter winds) and Deciduous on the south.(loses leafs creates shade for hot summer months)
Once again Volunteer groups could organize distribute and make minimal profit. Girl guides etc. Good fences make good neighbours. Stops noise from Tractor trailer parking in drive way also.

Sink Ships for scuba attractions. Produce maps with known ship wrecks Public kiosk wharfs scuba clubs.

Ice diving (Penetration) has to have be the best and most interesting diving I’ve ever done! Find a lake with a river flowing out (doesn’t freeze) Throw float onto ice and do sweeps under the ice half moon arcs.

Hostels
These are what students stay in when they are touring Europe. They are also used for seasonal workers more often than now students touring. Berry pickers potatoes harvests etc
Blue berry farms work force or experiment with Cranberry harvesting method? Maybe use salt water? Salt water irrigation does work or at least has been experimented with
Potato farm work force

Tried and test in Canada’s worst climate according to environment Canada’s study. Us NL as a testing ground for cars planes clothes etc. I think Alberta is now one of the sites LOL according to environment Canada it has the best climate?

Invite Mennonite communities to come and farm in NL.

Federal government just build a new RCMP station in Amherst with an electric generating wind mill. Now a civilian company is going to build a wind mill farm beside it.

Surfing using wet suits I bet there are lots of good waves around the coast of NL Wet suits eliminate the cold Atlantic.

Use tailings from Voisey’s bay to build a Cause way or islands for power towers. They built an island in Montreal and Japan. Cut spans down to 4 km each or 2 islands 3 km each.

Fixed link roads
Instead of side loading train cars load lengthwise. This is how Austria does it to go around a mountain also Germany to transport the military just adds bridges between cars.

One tunnel divided into two so that each lane creates its own ventilation by the flowing traffic. Or two tunnels same thing each tunnel creates its own ventilation caused by traffic flow.

Use concrete dividers on Highway to create divided highway. Helluva a lot cheaper than 4 lane divided highway while achieving the same effect. This would also stop the moose from crossing the highway, bare minimum at solid line areas. Also in Germany on the auto bahn they have post paddles on top of Concrete dividers to allow each lane to use high beams. Actually it was guard rails that were removable in case a runway was needed in war time (

Sports

Dig scraps below water table so that upon freeze up they become instant rinks safe because water is only 1 foot deep.

Build 4 plex softball areas. Ball diamonds are exactly that a diamond and 4 diamonds together make a square. Put amenities in the middle. Light poles service all four fields. One fields could be a little league fields to accommodate this. One fence divides tow fields. One back stop works for two or three fields. Great for tournaments. Could even have one baseball one softball etc. Or use a removable mound for more adaptability.

Twin Province with BC!

Moose hunting raffle.
Had one at a dance I was at recently here on the mainland for a moose hunting trip in NL. Could even be a donation to some lucky Newbrunswicker in recognition of their donation of the original moose.

Mascots
-NL pony
-NL dog
Tourism
-Passport Stamps from post offices or such showing you’ve been to all of Canada once filled get honorary Canadian certificate etc u get idea. Pins badges plaques for olks march walking canes.

Ring with Rifle shell on face saw one of these it looked awesome. It was made from a nut with the firing face of a shell as diamond. The one I saw was made in the Corner Brook pulp mill. Americans would eat this up.

Ever see those Garfield’s hanging out of a closed trunk? Do a similar thing with moose.

Labrador tea novelty could even be experimented with for real use. I’ve had it, it isn’t so bad in a pinch.

Spruce beer. Once again novelty

Pirate Island under man in the mountain in Corner Brook

Ever thing designed or built in NL should be done with winter in mind. Guard rails that cause snow drifts should be replaced with Cable guard rails. Or if snow fences are used trees should be planted to create the snow fence. Wind tests probably needed here. Work with nature not against her. TLH could use some of these according to the pictures I’e seen.

Use tires for break waters or jetties. Never decompose allow boats to bump up against no damage. This would be a great use for unused tire stock piles.

Rappelling NL has lots of safe cliffs for this sport wonderful confidence builder. Probably could use some real anchor points funding and supervision work labour volunteer groups.

Tractor trailer sports.
A tractor trailer loaded with wind surfers Jet skis, Scuba gear, rappel gear etc that travels around to remote communities. This was one I wanted to do.
Has own work shop class room etc.

Snow festival snow sculpturing once again cruise ship timings critical.

Individual Meal Packs IMP’s MMm Salmon.

Someone swim the Belle Isle Strait to illustrate how short a distance Labrador is from Newfoundland. Fund raiser for cancer etc.

Ferry from Old world to new world Along with cars.

Geodesic tourism

Ferry from Bar harbour, Boston, Bangor? If nothing else during tourist season once again round trip tourism. 300 million versus 29,000,000 million can’t count NL ½ million.

Howley Plaque Namesake Mr Howley.

St John doesn’t want the Natural gas storage facility. Take it.

Run the new power corridor along the south coast of the island portion incorporating a south shore road. Never made sense to me why an Island and marine culture would put a road through the middle, and avoid the coast? Look at NS and NB their roads are around the coast.

Low cost ski hills using Ski doos as lifts? The powder would be unreal. IE Blow me downs.

Real estate?
The only portion of the province that has MLS listings is St John’s and Gander I think. What with virtual tours and the WWW real estate could be marketed all over the world, in migration not out migration. New money also.

Chip seal roads way better than crack sealing. Or resurfacing IMHO but what do I know?

Oh and the ruts in the roads IMHO aren’t from heavy vehicles more like the road wasn’t built right to begin with. Pavement is only like window dressing the real road is the sub grade. So what you drive on will only be as good as the sub grade. And with NL being known as the rock I fail to see why this is happening. Water will also do a lot of damage in the sub grade if the ballast isn’t big enough or properly separated, compacted drained. Frost shouldn’t matter if constructed properly.

Create and issue a commercial licence for Ski-doos and Quads that are working. I’ve seen men working with quads take out 8 cord of wood a day not for fire wood either but to sell to saw mills or pulp mills. Ease up these could be great working vehicles.

Put tires around telephone poles painted. Use tires as crash guards. Maybe even to divide highways eliminating the dangerous head on collision.

Use Ice bergs for navy air force target practice? Use dude rounds Environment. International training.
Use the sonic boom from F18 fly over to trigger avalanches in BC Mountains.

Tractor Trailer car trains.
Ever see those campers towing spare car do a similar thing using tractor trailers towing 10 20 cars. Whole new meaning to car pooling, Car pulling. (A Standard would work best unmodified, Automatics would need their transmissions disconnected I think cooling issues) Maybe passenger car or have people remain in cars? Designated pick up drop of points. Rest relax on journey have car at destination. Save gas save environment. Faster use speed lane. This would only work on Highways due to turning restrictions. Just picture those baggage trains they use at the airports.
Or use flat beds 5 cars per or ten if loading docks were built. Angled parking onto and of of trailer drive on drive of. Small cars I’m guessing because a tractor trailer bed is 6, or 7 feet wide I forget. This would also work for the proposed fixed link train set up better than their picture depiction IMHO.
Car haulers as they now exist could even be used just time consuming loading and off loading.

Ginseng farms

Hemp farms

Cable ferry across Strait Belle Isle
Easier and faster docking
Less complicated ferry
Unsure about this, just a thought, they use them on the St John River 1500 metres. Definitely only summer use I’m guessing.

I never understood why signs and bill boards don’t have their contact info on them? My best guess is that it is a hold over from when there were no phones or internet.

Solar street lights

Solar motion detector lights along US Canada Border, Or the US Mexico.

Let people sleep in their cars or campers on ferries! It’s got to be doable just needs to be thought about and emergency measures implemented. A marine Atlantic worker once responded when asked where the life jackets are. “Don’t worry about that your better off jumping into a shower and scalding to death than freezing to death”
Survival in the North Atlantic without a survival suit is estimated at 5 minutes.

Potato issue with blight etc make powdered potatoes French fries. Also would eliminate the competition with PEI some.

Evaporate salt water to make salt. Use salt water to salt peanuts in shell etc Salt was once the spice of choice.

Build freezing facilities in Labrador it’s already cold so would require less effort to freeze things. Maybe even take advantage of heat pump technology.
Freeze tires to shatter in order to remove cords and steel wires. Uses Mulch, road cover, bulk etc.

Update:
Wood pellets for pellet stoves from waste wood.
Bog fire bricks

Softwood only has the heating value of 1 to 5 of hard wood. Start using NL vast coal reserves for home heat save the wood for construction materials.

Vulcanize road surface. Put recycled tire mulch onto surface and either chemically of through fire melt it into road surface vulcanized.

Northern climate design principles paved shoulder as side walks.
Suspended mass transportation eliminates snow clearing problems. Cable cars suspended trains. Also eliminates frost and terrain issues.

Make dog and cat food or animal feed from rendered Seal by products.

Have different rates for peak power usage and of time usage IE: 10 cents day time 3 cents night time. Similar to what the phone companies have. Cape breton has a system like this to help with electricity shortages for business.

Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights Festival) Photos expose. Annual event.

Paris to Dakar rally. NL style Labrador City to Red Bay!

Update:
Fish Perogees!

Would allow for value added potato industry and what with us not allowing potato exports whole.
