According to DFO there are 16 foreign nations who have a legal right to catch 900 tonnes of cod this summer on Newfoundland's continental shelf, while a Newfoundlander or Labradorian is a criminal for catching one cod.
Dear DFO: I just read your letter to the editor claiming that I am in error. I am not in error and you know it. You claim that the foreigners are catching "only 900 tonnes of codfish" on the east coast of Newfoundland, instead of the 5,900 tons I estimated in my column.
If you are correct that the foreigners will legally catch only 900 tonnes of cod this summer off the Avalon Peninsula and the east coast of Newfoundland, then what in goodness name are you doing arresting Newfoundlanders for catching one cod?
Here you are DFO, in letters to the editor in weekly newspapers, and on VOCM and CBC news, claiming that the foreigners are catching "only 900 tons" of Newfoundland cod this summer off the Newfoundland coast and you are bragging about it.
