Atlantic Canada's melting pot!
Canada’s (US) melting pot?
Is Canada going the route of the US by bunching all of the Maritime/Atlantic provinces under one umbrella, into one melting pot?
It’s certainly starting to look like that is the unofficial policy in Ottawa. Whether they want to admit it or not their actions are speaking volumes!
Here are a few examples:
Weather is the same in the Maritimes Provinces as it is in the Atlantic Provinces.
Moved Gander weather station to Halifax?
NL is lumped in with PEI, NS, NB on the environment Canada’s web site Atlantic region. Mean while it is Environment Canada’s Weather Winners Website that just released a report that NL has the worse weather and NS has the best (warmest) weather?
Moved the PSC Public Service Commission from St John’s to Halifax?
Unemployment in NL is 27% Maritimes 15% guess work here? Minister comments on federal decision to close PSC office, ACCCRC, and DFO's Toxic Chemical Program
Closing The Atlantic Cool Climate Crop Research Centre. I guess PEI, NB, and NS have the same climate and soil conditions as NL? NL Agrologists news release
Support for 5 Wing Goose Bay is non existent.
No Canadian fighter Squadron based there (Camaraderie with foreign air forces is non existent)
Weather forecasting in Labrador and especially 5 Wing Goose Bay is taken from the farmer’s almanac? No Doppler radar for the entire Labrador region? Make no wonder foreigners think we still live in Igloos.
Do CFB Gagetown, CFB Charlotte Town, CFB Dartmouth and CFB Halifax have NL’s best interests in mind when it comes to defence, jobs, and funding? No but they do want the jobs and funding!
NL’s Supreme Court Representation is lumped in with the Atlantic Provinces. I guess NL has the same ethics and Morals as PEI, NS, and NB?
According to the selection criteria on the Supreme courts web site there will never be a NL appointed to the highest court in the land because you can’t have any provincial patriotism, and be a Supreme Court judge?
Governor General of Canada a Partisan appointment has never been from NL? I guess our fellow melting pot neighbours represent us there as well?
NS submitted a petition to stop the study or building of a Newfoundland-Labrador fixed link. (Can’t find more on this topic) Does that sound like NS has NL’s interests in mind?
Does Quebec hold NS, NB, and PEI hostage with respect to a national power corridor and access to other provinces through Quebec?
IE: Missing 350km highway between Sept Isles and Blanc Sablanc on the north shore. I’m guessing that the people of NS, NB, and PEI would rather not see this section completed anyway? This should be a federal initiative to unite not only N-L but all of Canada. This would be a much more worth while project, instead of putting a road up to Hans Island to protect Canada’s sovereignty. Same goes for the proposed new satellite to protect Canada’s sovereignty.
Exception that the road towards NB in Quebec is like a goats path, deterring people from travelling past Quebec to NB, NS, PEI, and NL.
Does NS, NB, PEI care that Quebec is fleecing NL from the Upper Churchill power, a contract that was in part negotiated by the federal government, and the Federal government still reaps profits from?
Does NS, NB, PEI care that NL has the highest out migration of any province? No because they are receiving our share of federal jobs, representation, and educated young people. Like asking the fox to guard the hen house again!
I hold no ill feelings towards the people of NS, NB, and PEI. Our fellow melting pot neighbours according to what seems to be the new Federal government’s policies.
But the fact remains that Newfoundlanders and Labradoreans have to look out for their own interests.
It’s geographically obvious that NS, NB and PEI do not have the best interests of NL at heart. Let alone the rest of Canada caring what happens to NL, the supposed rock around their neck LOL.
From my experiences of having been to and lived in almost every province in this country, if your going to put NL into any pot put them in with BC.
BC is a coastal province; it has vast regions of unpopulated space in the north not unlike Labrador. Its weather is not unlike NL considering the vastness of BC and the vastness of NL. Its people according to my experience aren’t much different from NL coming from a Hunters and gathers back ground. Ethics and morals of BC’ers aren’t much unlike those of NL IMHO. BC also is cut of from the rest of Canada not by water/Quebec but by the Rockies.
Why then does Canada, Canadians, and the NL people not object to the systematic lumping of NL with the Maritime Provinces NS, NB, and PEI? Through the forced, delegated, legislated, and combining of services within the Maritimes and Atlantic provinces.
Is it because we are too polite to say anything?
Do we really feel we belong in the same pot as NS, NB, and PEI?
Are we afraid to say anything?
Do we have the beaten wife complex and need a half way house? EU, USA, NL?
Are we or am I being paranoid?
Should we shut up and accept the status quo of? Out migration, unemployment, lower wages, lower standard of living, misrepresentation (fisheries) No representation Supreme Court, the list goes on and on.
I’m getting tired of highlighting the injustices being perpetrated, been perpetrated, and as sure as the past will repeat itself, continue to be perpetrated against the most giving, friendly, loving people in Canada as of today!

Even though the Royal Commission report was flawed in many ways, it did bring out some valid points. One of which you mention in this article.
The report identifies what we know to be true. The Canadian Government and the people of Canada continually lump NL in with the Maritime provinces and call us the Atlantic provinces. This is a very bad mistake.
We do not have the same sort of culture, history, geography or even weather.
Newfoundland and Labrador are, and should be considered, a distinct and unique location unto itself.
The report identified this problem very clearly. Unfortunately I doubt if anyone in Ottawa actually read it.
