This summer, while Newfoundlanders are not allowed to catch a cod to eat on the northeast and west coasts of our island, others are allowed.
Five hundred tons of cod will be caught by Spain and other European nations as a bycatch for their hake quota in the fishing zones 3N and 3O that start 60 miles south and southeast of the southern shore of the Avalon Peninsula.
European countries will catch 850 tons of cod as a bycatch for their skate quota in those same zones southeast of the Avalon Peninsula.
European countries will catch 825 tons of cod as a bycatch for their turbot quotas in zone 3L, a zone that extends right out to beyond 200 miles from the Avalon Peninsula, Conception Bay, Trinity Bay and Bonavista Bay.
