most informed political analysis will agree that our parliamentary democracy is flawed if and or outdated.

Problem is how do you change it when it works for the majority of the population and not the majority of the nation/provinces.

Hence not all Canadians are equal depending upon which province you are from.

Now people will try and argue that because some prov have more that 1 vote for 1 rep per 100k that the minority pop prov actually have more influence.

But what they forget is the relationship of 1 per per 1# acre or land or 1 resource so in fact the minority pop prov with large land masses and resources are in fact more contributors to the whole.

But since our pol sys is all based on numbers all of the national parties pander and cater to the masses. Since 66% pop lives in two provinces the rest of us hardly count only for the false promises during an election but when it comes to governing we the minority pop prov fall to the way side.

So how to change? What to change?

Equal prov non partisan provincial representation via an Equal Senate?

Never happen because our per capita pol sys works for the majority of the pop hence the majority of the pop will never elect a party that advocates equal prov rep.

Even if the CPC happened to get elected on some other platform if they tried to implement an equal prov senate it would be enough to unite the opposition to make the govt fall.

Since we still have the old First Past the post electoral sys FPTP it is winner take all and there is no way the minority pop prov could unite to change the unequal senate.

Now if we were to have a Proportional representation electoral sys the minority pop provinces could get elected and advocate a change to better represent the provinces to counter the rep by population conundrum and self fulfilling prophecy.

In the Northern hemisphere the winter time is a slow period for ferry traffic, and vice verse for southern hemisphere countries with ferry systems their summer is our winter and is their peak season reverse to ours.

Ever see those capsule hotels they have in japan?

It occurred to me what with all of the ruckess here in BC about the homeless in the Lower mainlands Vancouver downtown east side that something like those capsule hotels would work.

Temporarily or immediate fix would be a small C can 20 foot with 9 capsules in one end. 3 high 3 wide should fit nicely.

Or you could go with a bigger C can with a side opening and have 18 capsules 9 on either end with a common area and entrance through the middle.

These could easily be dropped down anywhere and could either be wired fro electricity and a common ablution area or just basic bunks with heat..

It would be important for them to be modular as they would need to be changed out and or meticulously cleaned occasionally. Maybe just Ozonating might be enough?

Being in the market for accommodation out here n BC Bring Cash I'm not surprised at the amount of homelessness because for all intensive purposes I too am homeless.

Which isn't surprising when you consider that this province charges TAX on your primary residence? I think this is the only province in all of canada that does so?

So essentially the 1% on the first 200K and 2% on anything over 200K artificially inflates housing prices. Especially when you consider that mortgages truth be told and nothing more than paying rent to the banks. Add real-tors 5% fees on top of that and the fact that houses get bought and sold every 5-10 years I'm not surprised housing prices have climbed beyond the reach of normal families and is becoming the pervue of big banks and developers.

Senator Lowell Murray, a Conservative pick for Canada's Upper House and a longtime Tory strategist, just gave the federal government an opportunity to do a little nation-building.

Problem is, in the modern parliamentary world, nation-building comes second to bare-knuckle seat-grabbing politics.

Murray's argument is simple: the federal government has a role to play in the proposed sale of NB Power to Hydro-Quebec. Murray points out the deal is unprecedented, and involves both the sale of a Crown corporation to a Crown corporation in another province, and a commitment that New Brunswick will bring its electrical regulatory system into line with Quebec's.

As Murray points out, it's an extra-provincial situation that should interest a federal government.

It's a marvelous "in" for a much larger issue: basically, the extra-provincial transmission of electricity, and whether one province should be able to hold control of the transmission to the detriment of others.

Here are some of my thoughts concerning DFO and the way they go about regulating our fishery. Since 1949, Ottawa controlled the fishery and the hardship and misery of mismanagement took on a new meaning.

Due to the shortsightedness of our premier at the time, one of the greatest resources on earth was passed over to the complete control of Canada.

“Come into my parlor”, said the spider to the fly. Guess who the fly is? We didn’t know it at the time but we were trapped in their web of deceit and mismanagement ever since.
They show nothing but arrogance and contempt for the Newfoundland and Labrador people.

They can’t be trusted. Instead of rooting out the foreigners who are destroying anything that lives, they creep or crawl on the ocean floor, spending huge amounts of money and countless hours of surveillance just to catch some poor innocent bugger out on the end of a stage with a fishing rod catching tomcods.

What a shameful disgrace of a faceless, ruthless government.

DFO is “stealing” you might as well say, our livelihood, our dignity, and self-respect, our very existence. After 500 years of unbelievable hardship the Newfoundland and Labrador, fishermen have evolved into a stubborn, independent lot who don’t know how to give up or throw in the towel.

Martyrs to the fishery and their way of life.

I have the utmost respect and admiration for those who strive to eke out a living from such an unforgiving environment.

The Newfoundland and Labrador fishery, as I see it, is dying due to the greed and mismanagement of Ottawa, and the raping of the stocks by European countries off the Grand Banks.

To make matters even worse they are now contemplating signing away control of the fishery to a bunch of ruthless pirates. If this is allowed to happen then we have no one to blame but ourselves.

Will anyone living here even begin to fathom the grief and agony this will cause our people who have striven for so long to make a living from the ocean, only to see it slip away forever, and never to return.

It’s totally shocking and unbelievable that our federal government would even consider such an atrocity as this.

“May we all unite, stand our ground and go down fighting.”

I enjoyed very much your show with Senator George Baker, former premiers Tobin and Peckford on NL's place in confederation 60 years on.

It was nice to hear an informed debate which didn't attack the messenger for delivering a message no one wants to hear. Myself included, that my country is systemically flawed and all of the national PROXY parties practise DEMOCRATIC DISCRIMINATION AGAINST MY HOME PROVINCE for partisan gain.

I ran as a NL-FIRST candidate in the last federal election because I wanted to give the people of NL a real choice from all of the national PROXY parties of the Upper/Lower canada majority tyranny, Mouseland.

No federal party can call a referendum, whether they be national in scope or nationalist.

You see it isn't the national PROXY parties we need to change it is our systemically flawed political system.

That is what the Meechlake and Charlottetown accords were about but because the systemically flawed political system works for the two principals ON/QU via their majority status of 66% of the population they don't want it to change and will never support any national party that endeavours to change it.

That is why Mr Harper nor any national political party will ever get a majority as long as he promotes a triple E senate.

Hope springs eternal in a democracy, unfortunately for NL with no equality and only per capita representation it is eternally hopeless.

The root cause of NL's woes in confederation is it's lack of equality all of the problems are only the symptoms.

So what we have now is the price of the oil coming out of the ground is down but the price of the refined oil by the very same companies is up?

So why isn't this relationship treated the same as the one involving two giant computer companies?

Triple E senate, Equal, Equal, Equal

The only real E in the triple E senate conundrum is the EQUAL E.

The Effective E is really a red hearing.
The only way a triple E senate would be effective is if it equal.

The Elected E is really a moot point. In fact it may well be self defeating because the House Of Commons and the Upper/Lower canada majority will never allow another elected body to challenge their supremacy.

Since our current TYRANNY OF THE MAJORITY political system works for those two principals they don't want it to change.

Further to that an Elected senate along partisan lines which seems to be the status Quo would also be self defeating and accomplish nothing because the senate would still be whipped into voting along partisan lines.

Then there is the reality that currently the provinces or more to the point the premiers like the fact that they get to deal directly with Ottawa and an elected senate would remove them from that loop.

It all comes down to our TYRANNY OF THE MAJORITY political system is broken. So how do we change it? There are lots of models to look too for influence and guidance.

But ultimately the goal is to give the provincial members of this federation a way to have an EQUAL say and represent their issues, concerns, values, morals, ethics and people on a truly national stage. Seeing as nowhere in our systemically flawed federation does this currently exist not in the Senate, Not in the Supreme Kangaroo Court of canada which has 3 judges from each Ontario and Quebec with the remaining 3 coming from the other 7 provinces, Now nobody would expect that the House of Commons would be equal so it is still a body of representation by population or TYRANNY OF THE MAJORITY if you will.

Now the parties that need to be placated here are the majority provinces, the french, the minority provinces, the Premiers, and The House Of commons.

So here is what I propose

6-10 bilingual senators from each province.
Appointed by each province.

This is basically a melange of the American equal senate, the Australian hybrid equal elected senate and the German Equal effective senate.

The provincial appointed senators wouldn't challenge the elected HOC the same as if it were elected.

By allowing the Provinces to appoint their own senators it would placate teh premiers fears of losing their sway with Ottawa.

Appointed senators wouldn't be beholding to the partisan politics which favors the majority provinces but rather would represent the provinces whom appoint them assuming their appointments aren't patronage appointments from the provincial party extensions of the federal parties.

Provincially appointed senators would be effective at representing their provinces while not being elected wouldn't have the same sway as the elected HOC.

By enlisting the support of the Provinces in allowing them to appoint senators would remove their fears of losing sway in ottawa.

By making bilingualism a criteria for the senate appointment would appease Quebec and french speaking canada while enticing the spread of bilingualism across the federation.

Dartmouth engineering professor and entrepreneur Victor Petrenko—along with his colleagues at Dartmouth and at Ice Engineering LLC in Lebanon, N.H.—have invented a way to cheaply and effectively keep ice off power lines.

The new proprietary technology is called a variable resistance cable (VRC) de-icing system. With only minor cable modifications plus some off-the-shelf electronics, the system switches the electrical resistance of a standard power line from low to high. The high resistance automatically creates heat to melt ice build-up or keep it from forming in the first place.

Finding ways around the strong dollar

Most people attending this year’s Canadian Manufacturers and Exporters conference in St. John’s last week seemed to have the words "lean and mean" firmly occupying their lips.

The economy may be booming, but a high dollar, competitors using cheap foreign labour and high transportation costs due to record fuel prices are putting pressure on local manufacturers to pare costs.

None of this is news to the players in Newfoundland’s seafood industry who have been battling all those factors for some time, not to mention the added burden of operating in an industry that is as much answerable to local politics as it is the stringencies of economics.

The key to fighting the decreasing margins on Canadian products sold into the U.S. when the dollar is high is to get your costs down ahead of time, Tippett argued.

Another thing Cooke did to get lean, Tippett noted was to integrate its operations. The company now owns subsidiary companies that do everything from manufacture nets, cages and feed for its farmed fish to operating a fleet of trucks for shipping fish to market.

"We’re taking six truckloads of fish a day into the New York and Boston markets on our own trucks and with our own people," Tippett said.

That kind of integration allows Cooks to control its supply chain "from egg to plate," he added, thereby better controlling its costs.

Hydro-Quebec would see recent annual profits slashed by 75 per cent - more than $2 billion - if it had to go without cheap electricity obtained from Churchill Falls.

That's according to a research paper published this week by the Montreal Economic Institute, a Quebec-based think-tank.

According to the study, Hydro-Quebec currently obtains 31.8 terawatt hours (TWh) of electricity from Churchill Falls.

Study author Claude Garcia calculated the impact of Churchill Falls power on Hydro-Quebec operations in 2007, assuming the controversial Labrador power deal had ended on Dec. 31, 2006.

"Profit of $2.882 billion in 2007 would have been reduced to $709 million," Garcia concluded in the report.

The sharp drop results from the end of lucrative export sales and the cost of importing replacement electricity.

"Hydro-Quebec would have had to find supplies on the market to replace the missing electricity," the study noted.

"It would have been possible to recover 17.5 TWh by reducing exports to zero, meaning the loss of export sales."

Assuming it had no access to Labrador power, Hydro Quebec would have lost nearly $1.5 billion from a resulting lack of export sales alone, the study found.

The additional expense to import power would have cost Hydro Quebec another $773 million.

"If an end to the Churchill Falls agreement in 2007 were to be simulated, it could be concluded that the return on Hydro-Quebec's activities on Quebec territory in 2007 would have been 3.6 per cent, which is below the 5.4 per cent cost of Hydro-Quebec's borrowings in 2007," the study reported.

Labrador power has a significant impact on the Quebec utility's operations, Garcia claimed.

"If Hydro-Quebec has a return on equity of 14.5 per cent today, it owes this essentially to the Churchill Falls agreement, to its exceptional hydroelectric resources and to the fact that it is not taxed on its net profit."

The Churchill agreement renews in 2016, and will ultimately expire in 2041.

The research paper argues in favour of the privatization of Hydro Quebec, citing inefficient operations and high cost structures, among other factors.

The author is a member of the board of directors of several corporations and former president of the Canadian operations of Standard Life. Garcia has also completed doctoral studies at the London School of Economics. He could not be reached for comment before deadline Thursday.

The original Churchill Falls deal, signed in the late 1960s, has been a sore point for Newfoundland and Labrador for decades.

The provincial government has claimed that Quebec reaped 95 per cent of net revenues from Churchill Falls - $19 billion of a total $20 billion - up to the end of 2006.

Just an exercise in futility IMHO because I don't think any national proxy parties would be any different when it comes t oa minority province like Newfoundland and Labrador because it is the system of Per Capita colonialism by all of the national proxy parties that needs to change and not the flase god parties of left and right when the yall have to work within the same faulty political system where Tyranny of the majority rules the day.

There was another example of a geared turbine where the blades were mounted to a 10" large pulley that was connected to a drive shaft that was anchored to two pillow blocks.
The PMDC or alternator was slung in the front below the pulley. Not sure about blade flex hitting generator but the blades were only 2 feet in length 1 foot of which was attached to the large pulley so I should have been ok. I'll try and find that pic again because the generator would have worked as the weight for the pole furl design.

I've been doing some research on building my own small micro wind turbine lately and I thought I would put some of it on here.

First of all I have yet to build one.

It would seem from all of my research that the revolutions of a direct drive turbine would be somewhere in the range of 500 rpm to 1000 rpm. 60 seconds in a minute 10 revolutions per second 600 revolutions.

The smaller the blades the higher the RPM. 4 foot diam 1000 rpm, 6 foot diam 600 rpm as an example in no way indicative of real or actual results too many factors to account for like torque wind bearings etc etc.

On bearings they would seem to be one of the big factors for longevity for the Permanent Magnet Direct Current motors and Alternators or Alternators conversions.

The beauty of using the Chevy 1 wire alternator either stock and geared up or modified to PMDC direct is the ease of accessing spare parts like bearings because it would seem that 5 years is the time frame for maintenance.

Then again the strength of building your own Axial Flux turbine along the lines of the Hugh Piggott design is the strength and durability of the bearings used as well as the ease and availability of the parts required to build it as well as service it.

Another thing to keep in mind for your design so to include some form of furling mechanism preferably automatic to protect your investment from self destructing or burnout.

From all of my research I have only found two low cost methods tail furl and post furl. See diagrams.

Anyway I'm not going to get too in depth here as I really don't know what I'm talking about having never built one so I will put many links and images as possible up here for you to decide and investigate further.

NL Hydro should really consider allowing people to use grid tie ins. Because if they don't people could easily go off grid and then they would lose out on all of their customer base. Wher as if they incorporate grid tie in people will augment their grid system if done correctly by reducing peak demand which is the real achillies heel of the grid. Anyway there are a lot more reasons to allow grid tie in than there are to not. The only one that I can think of to not allow grid tie in if done properly is to hold onto your monopoly and freeze out any and all competition.

Small wind turbines would be a perfect fit for rural economies of scale. It would allow the ingenuity and entrepreneurial spirit to thrive in rural NL. It would provide energy for the more populace urban areas. reduce GHG mitigate peak demand convert our economy from non renewable to renewable etc etc.

Insulation can only take you so far before the law of diminishing returns kicks in.

These would be great for rural communities on diesel generated electric, cost effective wise.

The entire population who live in and around the Holyrood diesel fired electric generating plant who complain about the pollution, allergies, and particulate should have one of these to do their part in causing the holyrood plant to burn less.

It comes down to personal foot print, and pro rating like is done in some jurisdictions more to offset peak demand than anything to do with economics or going green.

Same could be said for a carbon tax it should only be as much or as little as will make alternative energy sources competitive.

Any funding from a carbon tax should never be long term because if it actually works it should be lost right. What do you do then where does the taxation come from then?

Cooking the books Abitibi Bowater

We've seen this before and we'll probably see it again. It would appear that Abitibi Bowater attempted to cook the books to justify shutting down the pulp and paper mill in GrandFalls Windsor.

We've seen this before with the shutting down of the NL railroad, Closing of the Stephenville PnP mill, and the selling off of FPI.

There is no better way to get someone to cut of their own hand than to convince them that it is in their own best interest. That way they have no one to blame but themselves. IE asking the workers to make impossible concessions and then turning around and using their overwhelming power in the media to try and barter negotiate sway public opinion. This is especially true when you consider the majority of the public lives in two other provinces and there is nothing to counteract this unfair and lopsided situation where the Tyranny of the Majority rules.

Just take the Hockey ville competition as a prime example of how the canadian confederation works.

In 2008 the hockey ville competition was down to Port Aux Basques and some town in Quebec. Now numbers are very important in this analogy and specifically per capita numbers because Quebec has something like 7-8 million people and NL has just above 500,000 people.

NL's voted something like 5 million while Quebec voted something like 6 million times so without any form of pro rating, per capita, or percentage of the population of that provinces population being factored in no matter how involved and hard a minority province like NL tries to win in this system they will forever be subject to the will and whim of the majority provinces.

It is also necessary to keep in mind human nature.

OMG; I actually heard people talk about the new rumble strips on the NL highways and the complaint was they took away from the bike lane. I couldn't see or understand what the complaint was all about when I first heard it and my first inclination was to dismiss it as unfounded.

But when I was home I see what the complaint is all about it is founded and I can't believe the rumble strips were done the way they were?

The rumble strips were put outside of the existing defined roadway inside of the white strip and yellow strips.

If anything the rumble strips would have been cut where the white paint strip was. It would save money from having to replace the paint every other year. It would keep the traffic within the defined roadway. It wouldn't take away from the bike path.

just another thing I noticed with rumble strips used elsewhere. They are put in the center where there is two solid yellow lines to indicate no passing. Only thing different is these rumble strips in the middle have a spacing to indicate they are the center line as opposed to the side of the road are solid with no breaks. That is to say there is a space of 1 foot every 4-5 feet. Don't quote me on the exact numbers for spacing.

The far to few we have in Afghan now are even further fewer because of the caveats other NATO countries have on their troop deployment.

Afghan is a country of 30 million and NATO has somewhere in the range of 50,000.00 if I'm not mistaken. On top of that there is a sympathetic nation of 1 billion next door with a porous border.

I say bring in the UN and close that border with a neutral zone thus cutting of one of the major irritants and unknowns in the battle to stabilize their government.

I would never support imposing our systemically flawed political system upon another nation because our own political system is nothing less than Per Capita Colonialism.

Minority govt double take

I must say I am always confused when i hear the supposedly people in the know pontificate that minority govts are good for the country?

Well I'm not sure what country these people are living in but if you come from a minority province in this confederation a minority national party govt is definitely not good for your province.

It goes back to the "It's the political system Stupid!" as long as a national party is in power either in a minority govt situation or a majority govt situation where a minority prov like NL doesn't have it's own representatives and the ones we do elect to the national party have to toe the national party line or get ostracized and banished to the nether regions of the HOC where democracy is nothing but a faint rumor and representing your riding and constituents is a battle of one against 307 or 70,000 against 32,000,000.00 million, or at the very least the 22 million who live in the two majority provinces and don't want the system to change because it works for them.

Now the only way a majority national party govt would work would be if the leader of the national party govt was a benevolent leader IE: we would still be expected to come with cap in hand and on our knees begging for anything more than the political system of per capita colonialism share of our own resource revenues back from the democratic discrimination perpetrated by all of the national parties against the minority provinces in favor of vote buying and winning power in the majority provinces with the over whelming share of resource revenues from the minority provinces.

The thing is people are a liability to govts and income tax collection and disbursement is nothing more than a zero sum gain the only real positive balance the national parties have to work with is resource revenues being more from a minority province on a per capita basis that they can use to benefit the majority at the expense of the minority.

nation parties under a minority govt can't even be benevolent because they are forever under threat of an election so they are forever keeping Paul happy while robbing peter. Paul will never complain and even spin it so as to look like minority govts are beneficial for the country well that might be so if you consider the country to only be Ontario and Quebec where 66% of the population lives.

The only way a minority govt is any good fro a minority prov like NL within this confederation is if we elect our own Nationalist party MP's from the NL-FIRST party then we can use our vote in a minority govt to horse trade and elicit what is good for NL-FIRST.

You know it is funny I have actually done this. That is voted strategically. I did it mainly because I felt there was really no choice, no option so instead of spoiling my ballot or not voting at all I chose the lesser of three evils. I wasn't comfortable doing it nor did I really want to do it but faced with no real choice and no real option I did it in spite of my conscience and principles.

If you feel you have to vote for the lesser of two evils or vote negatively then there really is something wrong. The problem is if there really is no choice what do you do?

This is at the crux of why I am in this federal election. I wanted to offer the people of NL a real choice and in particular the people of St John's South Mount Pearl a real choice!

I've heard some people who are self serving and want to be the king maker infer not to split the vote. Well the NL-FIRST vote isn't splitting anything because we are a real option and a real choice we are not a national party unlike all of he other national parties we are the NL-FIRST party and our party line is to put NL-FIRST.

Your choice on the 14 Oct is between a national party and the NL-FIRST a nationalist party.

Now Nationalist might have a double meaning but just remember that no federal party can call a referendum only a provincial party can call a referendum.

Strategic voting is just another way of saying don't split the vote only with a penchant towards self interest and king maker for some, but when it comes right down to it all of the national parties will treat NL the same.

I even heard Walter Noel state in the MUN debate which I was excluded from say that all of the Liberal promises are contingent upon the availability of money and the state of the economy.

Who are the first to get cut of and cut back when times are tough?
The minority provinces, the disenfranchised the marginalized and those without a voice.

Don't think because we have someone at the cabinet table of the national party in power we will have a voice we've thought that for NY 60 years and look at what it has gotten us.

The only people who will benefit from Strategic voting are the Liberals or Conservatives because it relegates all others to secondary or inutile status. Nothing will ever change as long as we fall prey to this false mantra of not voting on principle and with your conscience.

Splitting the vote is just another way of saying strategic vote but where someone else is looking to be the king maker and have the king beholding to him or her.

Pasadena NL - Wayne Bennett, recently retired from Canada's Navy, will be the NL First Party's candidate in Humber-St.Barbe-Baie Verte for the October 14th federal election. Bennett, the son of Ivy (Perry) and Ernest (the Pepsi Man) Bennett, served for some 32 years in the Navy and with the Royal Nfld Regiment.

He is the founder and CEO of WRB Enterprises Limited. WRB Enterprises Limited is in the early stages of two developments in the Howley area. According to Mr McDonald's report of the RCMP intervention against him on VOCM backtalk he we stopped at the door by the RCMP and asked what his intentions were.

He politely explained that he just wanted to stand at the back of the room and hold his 2x2 sign up and not make any fuss other than to hold the sign.

The RCMP conferred with someone in the dictator of canada's staff and the RCMP proceeded to escort Mr McDonald outside.

So anyone who thinks China is the only country that uses unscrupulous tactics to quelch freedom of speech and limit protests is sadly mistaken.

This man is only 5ft 6in tall weighs 150 lbs and had no type of weapon on his person except the truth which he printed on a 2x2 piece of cardboard.

Please say it ain't so NFLD RR #593 Pacific

I realize that this is an old picture 1996 I believe.

If this is still the state of the last remaining Pacific exposed to the elements the way it is I must say it is not only a nationalist disgrace but a national disgrace.

My dad pulled this old steam locomotive from Steady Brook south park to it's current resting place in Humber village Corner Brook as one of his last acts while the NFLD RR was in it's death throws.

If I'm not mistaken when 593 was in Steady Brook park it at least had a over head shelter to keep the worst of the elements of off it but according to this picture taken in 1996 it has been left to degrade and deteriorate in the great outdoors along side of the ocean and road salt.

Someone please tell me this isn't still the case of how we preserve protect and display our once proud RR history?

The Norwegian coastguard captured this footage of the Prolific discarding up to 80% of its catch of endangered fish

A British trawler has sparked an international incident after being filmed taking a boatload of endangered fish caught in the Norwegian sector of the North Sea and then dumping the majority overboard in UK waters.

Norwegian government coastguards filmed the crew of the Prolific, a Shetland-based trawler, openly discarding more than 5,000 kg of cod and other dead white fish, or nearly 80% of its catch.

According to the coastguard, the boat had previously been inspected in Norwegian waters and declared legal, before crossing into UK waters where it dumped its load. The incident took place on 2 August but the video only came to light in Britain yesterday.

It is illegal to discard fish in Norwegian waters, but boats are forced to do so in European Union waters if they have caught the wrong species of fish or fish that are too small. Last year the EU estimated that between 40% and 60% of all fish caught by trawlers in the North sea is discarded. The practice of dumping is widely recognised as unsustainable but inevitable given the present EU quota system.

Yesterday, Norwegian minister for fisheries and coastal affairs Helga Pedersen, speaking to angry fishing communities in northern Norway who had seen the film, said she would press for review of the EU fishing policy and wanted to ban any boat discarding fish that were caught in Norwegian waters.

"Discarding fish not only means a massive waste of food and potential income, it also leads to unrecorded catches, resulting in a poorer scientific basis for our management decisions", she said. "I want a requirement that all fish caught in Norwegian waters, also by foreign vessels, must be taken to port, regardless of which final port is used. We will introduce new requirements, as a condition for obtaining licenses to fish, that vessels cannot discard valuable fish caught here".

Reidar Kaarbø, an independent analyst of Norwegian government policy said: "This must stop now. The EU community cannot be taken seriously if it allows this kind of behaviour. This is certainly not how to manage the world's resources."

UK fish experts said the practice of discarding fish was common but had rarely been so dramatically documented. Opinions were split on whether the Prolific was discarding fish for which it had no quota, or that it was "high-grading" its catch. This involves boats discarding low-value small fish to make room for high value larger fish.

"It is a disgrace. This practice is depleting populations that are already overfished and it is happening everywhere", said Willie MacKenzie, Greenpeace fisheries campaigner. "All of these fish are perfectly marketable, and have been legally caught. But if you are a fisherman it makes more economic sense to take boat to market with the most saleable fish, so you discard the lowest value stuff."

European Union quotas strictly limit the amount of fish that ships can bring back to port, but there is no restriction on the amount of fish they can catch.
The current EU quota system for fish sets quotas at individual species level, which are then allocated and traded amongst individual fishermen. Often they will buy quotas out at sea once they know what they are catching. This means that it is illegal to take back to port fish they have no quota for so these fish are discarded.

The solution, say environment groups, involves an overhaul of fisheries management, making discards illegal, and encouraging more sustainable fishing methods.

Yesterday, the Prolific could not be contacted but the ship's agents, LHD Ltd of Lerwick, said that it was rare for it to fish in Norwegian waters. "It is out of contact. We very rarely fish in Norwegian waters. That's the first time in years," said managing director Richie Simpson. "The reason there are discards is the ridiculously low quotas. Fishermen cannot make a living with them. They are at a ridiculous level."

The International council for the exploration of the sea, the leading scientific body for fisheries scientific, has repeatedly advised the EU that stocks of cod in the North Sea are much too low to be fished and has argued for no-go areas. However, every year the European government ministers override their advice and continue with a quota system.

A spokesman for the department of the environment, food and rural affairs (Defra) said: "Throwing dead fish back into the sea is a waste that nobody wants to see, but there is no easy answer. The UK is keen to ensure more effective and sustainable fisheries by reducing by-catch and discards, and the government is working closely with fishermen to achieve that."

I'm not sure what the capture rate of a picture plant is and with a cursory search online was unable to find the info?
I wonder would it be possible to grow these and sell them from green houses to people as an effective means of controlling mosquito's?
Be sure to tell your kids not to disturb these plants for several reasons. One they are our national plant two they eat mosquito's.

Homemade Fly Traps

Cut a plastic 2-litres soda bottle 1/4 down from the top. Invert top portion into bottom portion. Punch 4 holes at top, tie string (twine) to hold both portions together and hang. Add hamburger or fly bait (I filled the trap with 1" of sugar water and added a piece of ham.). Most flies are too stupid to find their way out!

I use these every summer to control the wasp problems at the cabin. They work so efficiently I am forced to empty them once a day because they get over full until the problem gets under control.

I found that some sort of natural fruit juice or fruit worked the best as opposed to plain sugar water.

I heard a man on VOCM tell of another version of this same trap for black flies.

Bucket black fly trap

Just get a 5 gallon pail or container of appropriate size take the lid off fill the container 1/4 full with water and add enough sugar so as that the water becomes saturated and the sugar will no longer dissolve.

The black flies will gorge themselves on the sugar water and become too heavy to fly and end up drowning in the sugar water.

Alot of sites recommend submerging bait in the water like meat or carrion as a bait.

I would take this one step further and add a funnel to the top of the 5 gallon pail to increase it's effectiveness.

In fact I think I will go out now and convert one of those water dispensing jugs to the pop bottle version. It would be alot easier to bait one large trap as opposed to 10 small pop bottle ones.

Oh the fish are going to be well fed this summer.

These should be mandatory or highly recommended for agricultural use as well a mink farms etc. Especially in and around residential areas. Quality of life you know and health issues.

Mouse trap
Different topic but along the same design.

I also make a mouse trap with a 5 gallon bucket that works really well especially for cabins and agricultural uses.

Take a 5 gal pail take the lid of string of wire some sort of rolling device across the top of the buckets mouth. place the bucket in a corner and put ramps leading up to the mouth of the bucket where the rolling device is.

Corners are best because you can put the ramps against the wall because mice are essentially blind and follow the walls.

For increased effectiveness fill the bucket1/4 full with water in summer or oil or antifreeze in winter.

Bait the rolling device with peanut butter as bait and voila be prepared to get rid of alot of mice come summer.

Bat Houses

There are lots of designs and styles of Bat houses but they all have the same basic concept and mode of operation and placement.

Bat houses are an ecological friendly alternative to pesticides and destructive practices to control insects.

There has to be something that will simulate the echo of a a cave.
There has to be some way for the bats to attach themselves to the interior wall.
They should be placed in a remote location away from your house.
They should be placed facing North I think?
They should be placed a certain distance away from the ground more to protect the bats from predators like cats I'm assuming.

While the perception that bats are venomous and attack people nothing could be further from the truth A-la Hollywood. The only reason they will buzz humans is because there are mosquito's around them.

Bats will eat their body weight in mosquito's each and every night.

Bird houses Swallows

If you or more likely your wife won't go for a bat house another alternative would be to build bird houses specifically a swallow bird house.

Now I will attest that these work and very very well. In fact when I live in Sackville NB we had a real problem with mosquito's. it was so bad you couldn't have any lights on outside at night because it would attract swarms of mosquito's. Even the light on your door bell had to be turned of or it would be covered.

I tried sever things to control this problem. I had a Mosquito magnet from from last house in Fredericton but it didn't work so well in Sackville because there was too much wind and in fact too many mosquito's for it to handle. Ti is also limited by the requirement for electricity and the cost of using propane. I would also recommend getting the larger one that uses the bags for containment because when it comes time to empty it or change out the container you can nuke the bag but the pod has a metal spring and you can't. I left a pod out so the remaining mosquito's would die before I emptied it but the birds had other idea :)

Insect Fogger

So I tried a propane insect fogger while it worked well I wasn't comfortable using pesticides what with my land being on the lake and having pets and kids running around and Ihad over an acre.
Birds eat dead insecticide mosquito's as do fish everything else so it progresses up the food chain. These things should be sold with a mask and no a dust mask won't do so be careful if this is your preference.

When I was in Yugo the British moved in with us and boy they don't mess around when it comes to mosquito's. The first thing they did was bring out this 50 cal sized fogger and fogger the entire building and grounds. It was like purple haze for the first few days until they killed everything within the fog and eventually they cut down to once a week or not at all. The stuff smelled like diesel or heating oil to mee but I guess it was an insecticide. I remember my dad spraying heating oil with a mister when I was younger so I guess it could have been.
Then they strung netting over every opening and entryway so that you felt like you were Maxwell smart walking down the tunnel of doorways. But it worked we didn't have anyone get sick from mosquito bites than god.

Bat Houses
So I next tried Bat houses which didn't work either because I located them wrong or there were no bats to attract?

So I built some bird houses not because I wanted to attract Swallows but because I had some scrap wood that I wanted to use. I just lucked in by drilling the right sized hole and placing them right.

That very year of the 4 bird houses I built and put up two had families of swallows in them with young ones. A bonus to watch the young ones plus have the parents scavenge far and wide for insects to feed them.

I like to watch birds fly anyway but to watch swallows swoop and dive after mosquito's was a truly exhilarating experience right in your back yard. Knowing that you weren't poisoning the environment and providing a place for the swallows to have their young.

The thing about swallow bird houses is they supposedly have to be cleaned each and every year after they nest in them. Well I didn't know this and as such didn't clean my houses but the swallows returned the very next year. But this is the reason Swallow houses need to be accessible for cleaning.

I think the idea for bird houses actually occurred to me when walking in the marshes of Sackville. It was a swamp but there were no mosquito's. I wondered why and started to take notice of all of the bird houses in and around the marsh.

Now I didn't build the typical swallow house mainly because I didn't actually know what I was trying to attract. I just built a closed square box cut a hole in the front for a door and a small hole in the back to hang the house. Then I hung them on a perpendicular axis so that the corner served as a roof. Dumb luck I made the holes big enough to attract swallows. I mounted them on telephone poles.

While song bird houses are nice swallow bird houses are functional.

Bug killer lights

I also had one of these when I was in Sackville. While it worked it was a bit annoying what with the constant zapping. It really freaked the dog out. It was also a nuisance cleaning. I found the bast way was with an air hose.
The light also burned out in one year. Which might have been because I first tried cleaning it with the garden hose bad idea. But the light bulb cost as much as teh whole unit originally.
I would also recommend getting the largest one you can because it will be easier to clean and work better.
To remove the annoying zapping in the middle of the night you also might want to use an extension cord and place it as further away from your outside as possible.
But the good news is they do work.

I always wanted to mount mine on the end of the dock over the water and leave the bottom open so as to feed the fish but never got around to it.

This might be a good way for aquaculture enterprises to cut down on their food bills. This would also serve as a security measure in and around the aquaculture ventures.

These will kill millers with a little extra long zap and all of the little peskie nippers but I never noticed any black flies in it.

Something else I wanted to do with these was mount them where you would normally mount your outside light. Kill two mosquito's with one stone.

Might even be a good idea to develop street lights for towns that incorporate insect zappers into them.

There is even a solar power insect zapper out now. Not sure how well it works.

Prevention.

Drain standing water
Hang simulated hornets nests
Put yellow bug lights in your outside receptacles.
Netting. Spread the Net
Usual bug sprays
Keep your lawn mowed because mosquito's breed in long grass.
Plant plants in your garden that repel mosquitoes.
and of course take yourself off the menu at dawn and dusk when mosquito's go on the daily feeding frenzies.

Frogs

I've always marveled at the little green ping pong frog fences I saw in Germany which channeled frogs to culverts under roads so they didn't get killed crossing the road or sunning themselves on the hot pavement in the evening.

So if you have or want a water feature frogs would make a great addition to counter the breeding ground of mosquito's.

Commercial

There are also larger commercial versions of most of these products that work on a larger scale for applications like golf courses and agricultural uses.
This might be an option for a town or municipality to investigate rather than the annual insecticide programs.

Onward and upward
The Independent is on the block, if you haven’t heard and care to know.
Brian Dobbin, the publisher and financial
backer, says his interest is not in Newfoundland anymore. Which is a shame to hear from the Newfoundlander
who put so much of the hum in the Humber Valley. He’s disillusioned with this place, to put it mildly, but I’ll leave it to Dobbin to tell his own story. I don’t know the details.
What I do know is that Dobbin saw potential in this newspaper, backing it for four years and four months. He was the best of publishers, in that he rarely stuck his nose in editorial’s business, granting the newsroom the most precious of gifts — freedom.
But I’ll come back to that further on.
Some history to begin: the rocky road of an upstart newspaper. The first issue of the then-Sunday Independent rolled off the press on Oct. 12, 2003, smack dab in the middle of the Williams/Grimes election.
The powers that be at the newspaper
back then — full of piss and vinegar, if not newspaper know-how — were eager
to tap into the political coin, although they didn’t get much in that first paper, a full-page ad from Danny and a quarter page from the Liberals.
The first owners lasted at the helm for almost five months when, on the verge of shutting down because of low ad sales and poor circulation, they passed the reins to Dobbin, and new life/cash was injected into the paper.
Then, two years and five months later, on April 1, 2006, the Pink, White and Green was lowered to half-mast on the front page and the newspaper said an official farewell and we printed our last issue. Dobbin’s resort company went public in the EU and the new foreign investors, in Dobbin’s words, didn’t see the business value in a “small upstart paper
in Newfoundland.”
Dobbin called me a day or two later and offered me a chance to resurrect the paper with a public appeal for advertising
and subscriptions. If the public wanted
an independent press, they had to get off their butts and support it.
It worked. The paper missed one issue
before roaring back to life, led by a core of editorial employees who were granted a piece of the ownership pie. The boost substantially improved our bottom line. The paper has made fantastic headway
since the restart, and Dobbin agreed to remain on as publisher and financial backer.
The Buy and Sell magazine took over our rural circulation, making us a true provincewide newspaper, available from one end to the other. We changed our distribution day to Friday from Sunday, making The Independent a weekend paper
to compete against the Saturday Telegram,
the most successful paper in the land.
We made a case to the province to treat this newspaper the same as The Telegram or Western Star in terms of government advertising. Government agreed, coming on-board about a year ago as an anchor advertiser.
Our circulation has grown 9.2 per cent since last fall, which is unheard of in a day and age when newspapers are said to be dying off. Our advertising has also made inroads. Our largest paper to date has been 48 pages. The one you’re holding
today is a solid 36.
But we’ve had challenges.
Our frontline sales people report that our rates — which are already lower than the province’s two dailies — are being undercut by as much as 40 or 50 per cent by the competition. It’s hard to compete against the bottomless pockets of Quebec-
based Transcontinental, the company
that owns The Telegram and Star and 15 other weekly papers in Newfoundland and Labrador.
But we’re doing it, and it’s important for us to succeed. In the absence of The Independent, Transcontinental would have a virtual monopoly in this province, a stranglehold on advertising rates and circulation. And content.
That’s bad news for the advertiser, and bad news for the reader. We have had expressions of interest in The Independent,
and it’s hoped a deal will be done soon. Two-week notices were issued to all 16 full-time employees on July 7, as required by law. Technically, employees
don’t have to work the two weeks, but every last one has remained on the job, a testament to their passion and professionalism.
The Independent’s mandate is unabashedly
NL first. We make no apologies
for that. We’ve been free to explore and investigate all things Newfoundland and Labrador, free from the responsibilities
that come with being the daily newspaper
of record. Our ambition is to remain
a weekly.
So much of this paper is tied to our history, but more of it is aimed toward the future. There must be balance.
While the province’s economic engine has never revved higher, there’s also concern. In the absence of a booming oil industry — both on the Grand Banks and in Western Canada — this province would be in the same old half-sunk boat.
The mining sector is going full tilt, and tourism is strong, but the fishery remains in tatters, and pulp and paper is shaky, to say the least. One particular newspaper editor would have you think all is rosy, and advise you not to worry about the past — build, don’t blame. But that editor
went fishin’ a long time ago and mistook
the nonsense of a babbling brook for a deeper message of complete acceptance
of our fate.
He does this place no good.
The Independent isn’t looking for a newspaper war, so much as a truce, acceptance
of competition on the same block. Which is how it should be.
Now is the time, with money and confidence
to spare, for Newfoundlanders and Labradorians to question who we are, where we’re going, and how to get there. The Independent is in the business
of challenging everything around us — from the CBC to Danny Williams to the Canadian Confederation. And so we should.

The Stephan Hopkins Memorial Foundation is one step closer to meeting its fundraising goal, thanks to a $25,000 donation announced by the provincial government on Wednesday.

The foundation is attempting to raise $265,000 for new side-scan sonar equipment for the province in memory of Stephan Hopkins — a 19-year-old man from Deer Lake.

Hopkins drowned as a result of a boating accident in July 2007. Following the incident, RCMP divers and search and rescue teams attempted to find the young man’s body. After a week of intensive searching, the body was still missing.

Hopkins’ uncle eventually contacted Gene and Sandy Ralston, who specialize in underwater recovery operations.

The Ralstons pioneered side-scan sonar technology. The technology operates as a search tool, allowing large underwater areas to be covered in far less time than with traditional search methods.

The Ralstons came from Boise, Idaho to assist the Hopkins family. They were able to find Hopkins‚ body in approximately 80 feet of water. The search took less than an hour.

The Hopkins family now wants side-scan sonar to be readily available in the province.

“What happened to us was a family’s worst nightmare,” said Stephan’s father Terry Hopkins. “Our 19-year-old son was involved in a boating accident which claimed his life.
Coupled with that, we were unsuccessful in trying to locate Stephan’s body for 73 days. We vowed that no family would ever have to endure such pain again.” Rest of the story at The Western Star.

While I haven't had the pleasure of using side scan sonar I have quite often heard and read about it's extraordinary uses and advanced technology.

Something like this would make mapping and charting all of our unmapped inland lakes so much easier. Hence being able to produce high quality hydro maps for users who are unfamiliar with the hidden dangers in our lakes.

As part of the EcoAction Trust Fund for Clean Air and Climate Change, the Government of Canada provided the Province of Newfoundland and Labrador with funding over a three year period to support projects that provide real reductions in greenhouse gas emissions. The Province has allocated additional funding and expanded the criteria to include aspects of environmental sustainability. The Newfoundland and Labrador Green Fund incorporates both funding sources.

ST-PIERRE, France — A Renault swerves into a narrow alley, coming within inches of sideswiping an unsuspecting tourist.

It’s lunchtime, but shops and bars are closed.

Stressed out yet? Relax.

The archipelago of St-Pierre-Miquelon operates on its own rhythm and offers a refreshing change of pace for travellers.

Nearly 500 years after its rich fishing grounds lured enterprising Europeans, St-Pierre-Miquelon remains France’s oldest overseas territory and retains much of that country’s character.

The tiny islands off the south coast of Newfoundland are a largely undiscovered piece of the old country, promoted as a place “where France meets North America.”

Front line ambassador training or information packages.

Our front line ambassadors are the tourist reps, and service people like taxi drivers, bus drivers, airport workers etc. Oh and lets not forget the Economic Embargo called Marine Atlantic employees.

These are the first real people a person visiting our province are likely to encounter and more importantly interact with so it would only seem logical to inform and educate our front line ambassadors with the message we want to get out to any visitors.

This would be a targeted campaign of either courses or pamphlets and eductional material.

Stuff like the most obvious statistics about NL like it is the
furthest point East of North America,
Our Continental shelf is the size of the three prairie provinces combined
We were the last province to join canada in 1949 after two previous referendums.

Then there is always the captive audience in Hospital waiting rooms or Libraries. We could send our free copies of our provincial publications to all of the markets we want to advertise in. Things like the Independant, Downhome etc.

Newfoundland Labrador Fresh air tourism ad

A three-dimensional superboard, featuring traditional quilts on an actual clothesline, is located on the Airport Parkway in Ottawa. It marks the launch of Newfoundland and Labrador’s summer Fresh Air tourism campaign.

You know I always wondered what the use of those shewally thing's that used to be advertised on TV. You know the dry mop that was advertised for cleaning of your car. I could never understand what the use of them would be. There was no way a schewally would clean road dirt off of a car. But since moving here to the Okanogan in BC which isn't even a big city there are only something like 125,000 people living here but it seems every day I would have a use for one of those schewally's. You could wash your car each and every day but each and every night the pollution in the air would settle on your car with the morning dew. I'm guessing that for this particular location it is mainly due to the micro climate where everything gets trapped in the valley and settles out here.
